1982 Ford 300 6 Carb 'Cleaning'

I've got a 1982 Ford straight 6 300 that you folks have been helping me out with from time to time.

The carb that came with it had a bunch of hoses unhooked, no choke stove, and the throttle linkage was broken.

My distributer has a vaccuum advance.

I switched out the original messed up carb with a decent carb from a 1985, leaving most of the hoses unhooked.

I'd like to use the 1985 carb but take off the throttle position sensor and unhook the remainder of the vaccuum lines (it ran great for the first 1000 miles with the 1985 carb but now its idling rough and I need the truck this weekend to pull some trees around).

Can I 'get by' permanently with the '85 carb unhooked, or do I need to acquire an early 70's carb?

Thanks for the help, Arne

Here's the truck.

Here's the interior, just okay.

Here's the distributor with the vaccuum advance.

Here's a hose that goes from the air pump to the what looks like the intake below the carb - the air pump is currently frozen and unhooked. I have another air pump and was going to hook it back up, any thoughts?

I have heard the later computerized carbs do not have a ported vacuum source for the distributor. And it's also tuned for the egr and other emissions. If you could get a older carb, it would work better.

That sounds like a plan.

I'd probably be looking for a 1981 or 1982 carb for a I6 300 then, anybody have one for sale?

Thanks, Arne

try checking the buy/sell/trade thread in your local chapter... old carbs should be fairly easy to come by

If you are using a 1985 carburetor, it is going to be a feedback model, which means it is going to need the computer, sensors, and all that other mess in order to run correctly.

In 1984-1985, the feedback carburetors used the EEC-IV computer to control the timing (that is why there is no vacuum advance on the distributor on these models), and the air/fuel mixture along with emissions. Also, the ignition system is different compared to what you should have on your '82 model. So if you are using a vacuum advance distributor, you are going to need a non-feedback carburetor.

Look for a 1983 or older carburetor (non California models) or aftermarket.
