What was the actual year they started putting OBD2's in the F-150's? My 95 puts out 2 digit codes and a guy I just got off the phone with said that's impossible because my truck has the OBD2 in it not the OBD1. I was told and the code reader for my truck is for a OBD1. Is there a way to truly tell.

 

1996 was the year mandated for all vehicles to have OBDII except for vehicles above 8300 GVWR (I think that is right). I would have thought your truck would have 3 digit output, but someone said here that it depends on your transmission, i.e. E4OD, AOD-E, 4R70W did have 3 digit codes manuals had 2 digit.

 

Mine is an auto with a 302, on my code scanner it's putting out 2 digit codes. Even when I took it to my brother-in-law at the Ford dealership it came up wityh a 2 digit code. I don't know which tranny I have, it's either an AOD-E or an 4R70W. It's hard to tell cause both had a 14 bolt pattern.

 

AOD-E and 4R70W are essentially the same transmission on the outside. The internals are pretty well the same except for the gearing, with a revision in the late 1990's. I believe that the trucks received the 4R70W and cars the AOD-E.

 

Yeah, the AOD-E is a little smaller than the 4R70W, without putting together side by side I think it'd be hard to tell one from the other. Someone else may know different.

All light trucks under 8500lb GVWR were OBD-2 in 1996, but trucks over 8500lb didn't get it until the '98 model year.

 

Wouldn't it be possible to tell by the test connector?

 

It's got nothing to do with the transmission.

If the test connector is under the hood behind the airbox it's OBD-I. If the connector is under the dash it's OBD-II. The switchover to three-digit codes was around the 90-92 time frame. A 1995 F-150 will be OBD-I and will give three digit codes.

 

I guess I'm going to have to recheck my scanner again, cause mine's putting out 2 digit codes. It'll flash (beep beep [short pause] beep beep) long pause then put out the next code.

 

Unless someone swapped the PCM out with an older one (anything's possible if you're not the original owner) then it should definitely be three-digit codes.

 

I bought it off my neighbor and he told me that he had to get the computer rebuilt a couple of years ago. Maybe when they programmed it, they progammed it for 2 digit codes. If that makes sense.

 

You can't program a PCM (well, you can, but you can't change the codes it puts out, at least not very easily). But if he had to get it "rebuilt" it really means he had to get it replaced, and the replacement obviously gives you two digit codes.
