5.4 Gas Mileage Bad

I have a 99 EBwith 4wd auto, I put a Pacesetter TFX cat back exhaust and a intake on, my gas mileage is horrible. Im getting only 8.5 to 9 mpg. My truck has 19,000 miles and I replaced the plugs already and it has not helped. Does anyone know if I have to get my Computer recalibrated or something. Did anyone have this problem too. Thanks

I had the same problem in my 2000. I installed a Diablo chip and now get 12-13 around town and 16-17 HWY. I would first disconnect the battery for 30 minutes, This will reset the compouter and then it will adjust to your driving habits.

First, check the basics - air filter, fuel filter, tire pressures, etc. Make sure your transmission is flushed every 20K - you may be about due. Make sure you're using 5W30 - putting 10w30 or 15w40 or something else will lower gas mileage considerably. Unplug your battery for 30 minutes (like the other guy said) to reset the computer - it may be used to someone who had a heavy foot.

That's all I can think of right now; it's been a long day. More tomorrow.

"Make sure you're using 5W30 - putting 10w30 or 15w40 or something else will lower gas mileage considerably."

How will using 10W-30 instead of 5W-30 reduce gas mileage, especially in the warmer months and once the engine reaches operating temperature (very quickly)?

The only difference between a 5W-30 and a 10W-30 is that the 5W is a little thinner in colder climates/temperatures and that it has more polymers added (not a good thing) to account for a wider range of viscosities.

Sorry about that - it was late:-X23 I was talking about something like 20w50 - something that's going to introduce more resistance to the engine. People seem to enjoy ignoring manufacturer's specs - I just wanted to make sure he wasn't bogging the motor down with some kind of super heavy oil.

http://www.tornadoair.com

Anybody ever try the Tornado Air (.com)? It says it's supposed to increase airflow? I wonder how it would work in conjunction w/a K&N filter.

The tornado thingy has been discussed in great length, use the search feature. It is a complete waste of money, dont bother.

Okay, am I blind? What happened to the forums search feature? I'm logged in, but all I see is the website search, and the parts search, at right. I'd like to search the previous discussion about the Tornado, as my husband is thinking we should try it (I think it's bogus).
