np435 gear ratios
Hi, The NP435 was used in trucks (Ford & Others) from 1964-1987 and was produced with 2 different ratios ! The first was a close ratio which had a 4.78 1st, 2.39 2nd, 1.37 3rd, 1.00 4th. The other (more commenly used) has a wide ratio 6.69 1st,3.34 2nd,1.79 3rd,1.00 4th.They also made these with 2 different lenght tailhousings and shafts, the long tailshaft is a 14.5 inch, I don't recall the length of the short but I want to say it was eather 7" or 8.5", the short shaft used in Ford trucks was primarily used in heavy duty trucks (1 ton and up). The long shaft is the one most light duty truck owners look for as it's a direct bolt in replacement for the 3 speed box with column shift. Keep in mind depending on your differential gear ratio the first gear on this trans may be of little use during daily driving and you will more than likely find you have a 3 speed on the floor instead of a 4 speed, opt for a 2.75 gear out back. If you simply don't like the column shifter Hurst makes a floor shifter conversion kit just for this application, simple matter of cutting hole in floor for shifter and installing a shifter boot! This is by far both cheaper & easier than a gearbox swap. Hope this will help somebody out, Dan H. (hotboat1)
