Question 3.5 v6

I bought an 07 Edge and someone asked me if the dohc v6 is an interference engine, in other words if the timing belt/chain breaks, does it take out the valves when piston comes up?

I believe the 3.0 Duratec and 3.5 version like yours are interference engines, but they use timing chains, not belts, which to my knowledge have no history of breaking in any kind of numbers.

The long timing chains used in these engines do wear, but at a much slower rate then in say a belt driven OHC system. The likeliness of the chain outright breaking is just about as good as the chain breaking on your standard pushrod V8, so almost no risk at all

Red face

Thanks for responses. I feel better already as I don't have any experience with this engine.

If memory serves me correctly, the EcoBoost torture engine had adjusted itself up two teeth in the timing belt tensioner mechanism. It has something like 10. Like the others have posted, just should not be an issue over the life of the engine.
