I competed in my first truck pull last night. I pulled in the 8500# work/stock 4x4 diesel class. I ended up pulling a total of 236' 10'' and that placed me in second overall. An 08 harley 6.4 beat me with a pull of 264 IIRC right before his rear center section SPUN on the axle tubes pointing his pinion nearly straight up and snapping the driveshaft. Anyhow, nothing too exciting, but I was happy with the results for my first time out considering there were 14 other trucks in my class.

 

Congrats on a successful debut. I used to love going to the pulls to watch, often thought about getting a truck together for it but have never done it...yet.

 

Yeah I have been to a ton but first time I have competed. I would love to build a pull truck but Im building a drag car at the moment and two projects are out of the pic at the moment.....Maybe one day.

 

Congrats man. Around here there is only 1 powerstroke that pulls on a regular basis. Its good to see something other than a cummins near the top.

 

I was expecting the place to be flooded with cummins, but there was atleast 4 6.0's and a handful of 7.3''s and 3-4 duramax and about the same cummins.

 

This is old but.......Do you use low range? Or high, and bury your foot?

 

Way old lol. From what Iv heard on pullin (although never doing it myself), you ease on the throttle enough to get the sled moving, then once you get up to speed, MASH IT. You want as much momentum as you can get before the sled starts to dig. After the sled starts to drop, then it goes from momentum, to traction. Whoever has the best of both wins lol

 

from what ive seen,,, if you can give it hell to begin with, you can have an advantage of taking more weight off the front of the sled, then it slides more easily... but dont just mash it,,, roll into it. works really well with a tall truck like this one,,,Wiliamston Dome 1979 Ford 2nd Pull - YouTube

there are different ways of pulling, just like in racing....

but yea, do you start in low range or high?

 

With a pickup you want to carry all the weight in the front, the sled will load the back for you. You want to get it rolling right away, if it starts hopping ease out of the throttle and let the suspention relax, then ease back into it smoothly. If its hopping and you stay on the smoke pedal you will start breaking expensive things.

And ALWAYS use low range, the trans will shift up if it wants to, and downshift when it needs to. High range cuts your avalible torque in half that will cause the sled to get moving slower. In high range as soon as you get a load on it you will already be in 1st gear and then the trans will just start slipping.
