I have an '05 6.0 PSD and I usually plug it in overnight. I notived 3 days ago, that my extenson cord had a melted spot on it, it's the same cord that I used last year. So, I put a new end on my extension cord, and it was again melted. SO, this morning when I unplugged my bus, I put that extension cord on my truck and when I came home 3 hours later, that cord had the beginning of a melted spot.
I took a closer look at the plug end on my truck and one of the "blades" was discolored and VERY LOOSE. Needless to say that cord for the block heater is really buried in there and super hard to get to, so can I just remove the plug end and put on a new plug ? And is it something that I might be able to do ?

Yep and it's a whole lot easier, than trying to replace the whole cord!

I don't know if the PSD cords are the same as the IDI, but I believe the entire cord can be replaced... If yer feelin froggy!

And I took a look to see where the cord was routed, and "no thank you" for replacing the entire cord, what a freakin nightmare. I'd have to be a contorsonist to replace it.

UMM, well since you thought of that, I'll provide the camera and the truck and you can figure out how to make your body parts fit where this cord goes You've seen under the hood what a jammed up mess is in there, that's why I'd rather try replacing the plug end first

But, I'm willing to drive it over for you to do it

I'll put a new end on it, if that's what you want... If the cord gets replaced, it will be YOU doing it with me TAKING the pics!

 

Oh gosh, I sure hope a new plug solves the problem, as for the other scenario, well, I'd rather not go there

Where do I get the plug end, find a dead PSD in a junk yard ?

I don't think they would have anything. If you aren't replacing the whole cord, your choices are a bit limited.

I'll get a new plug end tomorrow, and well, I might take you up on replacing it for me. Electrical stuff is not my favorite thing. I prefer power tools , I can saw, drill & hammer, but electric scares the bejeebees outta me,

If the cord routing is like an IDI, simple job from under the truck.

There is really really not much room ro run a new cord without it being a REAL nightmare of a job, so I'm hoping to try the new plug end first. Everything is just so darn jammed in under the hood, it's a real mechanics nightmare. "IF" the new end doesn't solve the problem, I'll have to get my bus mechanic to replace the complete cord I guess. He maintains my truck for me, as he does mechanical work on the side.

I sure wish it was as easy as an IDI,

Hi Kitty, I just replaced my plug on the truck about two weeks ago.

In my case, the wire had a nick right behind the plug and I kept getting shocked everytime I plugged or unplugged.

If you peel back that plastic accordian cover, you'll see that one of the wires is plainly marked "Neutral". That's pretty much all we needed to know. I clipped the wire right behind the head of the plug so as not to lose any wire length. We skinned all three wires back. I picked up a heavy duty yellow plastic replacement plug and wired it up. When we closed the plug, we stuck the end of the accordian cover between the two pieces of the plug so now it's covered completely...no exposed wire to get nicked.

I'll relay that info to Gary, as he picked up a new plug for me today, and I will be heading over his house for him to install it this evening . The truck is nice and clean right now, but it's raining here so it will soon be dirty once I pull out of the truck-port and then the cleaning process can start all over again. Dang, why did I buy such a big monster
