I just filled up with my first tank of b20. I plan on running this for a couple of tanks, changing the fuel filter, and then go up to b50 and maybe b100.
I think I have noticed less smoke, dont know if it is me or the bio, but I'm excited to step up to higher blends. Something about just loves the idea of bio.
What should I know be aware of?

Even @ 30% there is a distinct smell to it. Going to run 50% myself this next batch

 

don't be scared to run it in the 7.3. My first take i ran 75% bio 25% pump. after that tank i have been running b100. No Problems

 

Awsome. I'm excited, I just want to make sure I don't do any damage to the truck. I read that slowly upping the biodiesel percentage is the best way to go. I have read that the 7.3 loves bio which is great

 

I run 100% bio and I am always amazed at how clean my lube oil stays. I have approx 2K miles on this oil and I can still see the writing on the dip stick.

Be aware of the gell point though, think Fabman said that as long as it doesn't get below zero 50% is safe. You might want to have different ratios in small sealed containers so you can track which ratios are good at your temp... different oils have different gel points, and it might varie from batch to batch unless you are getting it always from the same sources... Does give an idea though.

 

I just filled up with my second tank of b20 today. My average mpg 16.5
I was getting ~12 over the winter so I don't know how much of that is the b20 blend or how much is my driving/fixed a couple things on the truck but this is awsome I'm stoked with the mileage numbers. Can't wait for a couple more weeks to get some b50 and b100

 

i have a quick question. what is b20,b50,b100? and also do you guys get bio at the sevice station. I am just wondering i am new to all this. Thanks

 

The number after the "B' is the percentage of biodiesel in the "mix". B-20 would be 20% biodiesel and 80% dinodiesel. I make all my own biodiesel.

 

Always hard to compare mileage on diesel's with cold weather. I know mine doesn't like it. Once the temp gets above 40 and the EBPV doesn't work, my mgp goes up 2-3 mpg. I can say that I didn't notice any difference driving across the stae except for the smell and maybe a a tab quieter.

 

Well, i have a 99' F-350 with the 7.3L Diesel Super Duty and have noticed the same thing...normally it gets 14-15 mpg and right now i'm getting a flat 11.6 no matter who's diesel i buy, or injector lubricant additives i put in. From what i understand, if you have the ebv removed (with a computer chip in its place) sometimes you can get better mileage (but wouldn't recommend it.) I can also tell you if you keep the block heater plugged in, you dont have to completely warm it up, just long enough for the coolant to really start cycling.

It is possible there is less smoke because BD is an oxygenated fuel thus there is less unburned fuel exiting the exhaust pipe as black smoke.

A more efficient burn can also account for your apparent increase in fuel economy.

 

I have a 2000 250 with a 7.3, Is it necissary to change the o-rings b4 running bio?

You are good to go. All Fords after 93-94 already have biodiesel ready fuel lines, so no changes are necessary!
