5.4 3v woes, P0345
BackGround:
I pulled a good engine from a 2005 and swapped it into my 2005 F150. I broke the front down as it had high mileage and put in new oil pump, timing chains, tensioners, and guides. I also used new CMPs.
Buttoned up and now it runs rough at best and throws P0345. Alternator is good. Wiring appears to be right all around.
I am fairly certain the timing was done correctly. We did not rotate the cam independently from the crank. It turns with no interference buttoned up. It has a definate miss in it and no other codes are thrown. The driver side Tchain had significant slack before replacement. Could I be out a tooth or two and be haveing this problem? I thought the marks were right but I could be wrong.
We put the old CMPs in and it still has the same issue.
Any recommendations?
How can I tell if phasers are bad?
Does someone have a timing procedure for this motor?
How would you progress from this point?

So we are talking just a connection issue here? I assumed it was not timed right. Bank two is driver correct? By spread terminals do you mean bent prongs and not contacting?
The plug seated on the sensor fully. I have tried two different sensors in that side so I doubt its the sensor itself. I will run the harness back to make sure the wires are in good shape and make sure the clip is making good contact.
Before I tried different sensors I also got a p0349 intermittant code from the sensor as well. I cleared and it has since disappeared.

I cannot tell yet whether it is audible as I have not ran it long enough to develop a feel for its normal sound. I just bought it (blown motor) and a wrecked one with a good motor and I am swapping the engine.
It may have a little noise coming from the head, would this, if a cam phaser, in its less than obvious state make the engine lope like it does? I mean at idle with no load it wants to almost jump out of the engine compartment. I cannot fathom that it would be that far out of time as we took great care in set up and theres not valves blasting off the tops of pistons.
BTW, I broke 4 GD spark plugs off in the head on this thing. That Lisle tool, which I found here is money.

Bank 2 is driver side. P0349 is basically the same as p0345 but indicating an intermittant open. A mis timed engine should not cause this code but the pcm cannot time the #2 bank correctly without this sensor operating. You may also try unplugging and reconnecting the PCM connectors incase there is a connection issue there.

Having fought a P0345 recently and P0349, may give extra insight. Per Ford hotline. Min oil psi hot has to be above 25 psi for the phaser to work properly. The code stands for circuit problem but base engine can also set code. The 5 blades that go past the cam sensor cannot be bent. If oil psi to the head is low it may sound like and exhaust noise on startup after 10 min sitting hot. 1 pin should have continuity to the other connector with both disconnected. The orange wire should have continuity to pin 44 in the rh -when facing pcm-connector.It cannot be shorted to the shield. After clearing the code it will reset after 2 restarts if fault is still present. A single coil on 1 of the 8 plugs can be causing a frequency problem setting the code. Disconnect 1 at a time and try restarting 2 times after each clearing of the code unless you have a scope to stress test the coils. If you have a miss or phaser noise fix the obvious 1st as the cmp will not cause the miss at and idle.

I have these same 2 codes po345 and po349. Idle is bad and it stalls sometimes. It is very down on power. The 1st code pull also had P0300 PO303 PO307 which are misfire codes on cyl 3 and 7. I just got the truck from a friend. He has an invoice that both cam position sensors where replaced. Is one bad maybed bank2?

I have a 2005 F150 5.4 throwing P0345, P0349 codes. The truck ran fine when parked in the evening, Started in the morning did not make it out of the driveway. Removed Cam position sensor from driverside bank.. Checked the Ohms, using left bank sensor as references. Both tested the same. I cleaned and switched sides, installed the sensors back expecting the codes to follow the sensor, instead I got the same two codes again. Replaced the drivers VCT solenoid, and checked ohms on passenger using new one as references, and got the same two codes again. Notices that you where talking of the Alternator, wondering if it could be related. If so, How can I test? All wiring seems intact. Truck starts and seems to run good for about 30 seconds and dies. Fuel pressure remains 38-41 cranking. Any help greatly appreciated.

remove the oil sending unit sitting behind the oil filter; it will be the single wire terminal. screw in manual oil pressure guage and note the oil pressure at cold idle,warm idle, and 2500rpm. compare to required specs or take my advice: replace the oil pump to get adequate flow pressure to the VCT actuators. the p0349 is due to good pressure at cold idle. The p0345 is due to steady poor pressure at operating temp.

I am getting a P0345 and P0349 at warm idle.... I have not gotten either at cold idle.
