how to build a wood bed?

I just bought a '90 F150 with more than its share of rust and plan on doing the same thing. After a couple of months to make sure the truck doesn't collapse on the side of the road, I plan to build one. My plan is to use four or five 2x8 on edge notched slightly to fit the cross ways on the frame rails. On top of that I'll use 2x6 or 2x6 with about 1/2" or so gap between them. I figure on using counter-sunk lag bolts to hold them on. Lastly I'll use 1x4s to make side and front rails that will fit into pockets on the bed.

I'll use either some sheet metal or fibreglass for rear wheel fenders and trailer lights for the brakes. I'll try to keep the current step bumper.

Let me know if you want to compare notes about building this thing. I can let you make the mistakes first, and I won't have to worry about them.

how to build a wood bed?

Hi Jeff - Welcome to FTE and the Bodywork forum.

Can you give us a little more info as to what you're looking for.

Are you just wanting to do something with the floor of the bed, the entire bed or what?

Are you wanting to go with wood or metal?

Flat bed, customized or stock looking?

how to build a wood bed?

Thanks for the welcome Carlene!
What I think I want to put on it is a full size custom looking flat bed. Steel around the perimeter with some type of wood floor, spots for stake pockets, something to keep things from sliding into the bed, and a good stout bumper on the back with a way to run stacks up each side of the back of the cab....
Whew ....I don't want too much do I.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated.....
Thanks,
Jeff

how to build a wood bed?

Hey Jeff -

I found this a while ago and knew it would come in handy:

http://www.4x4wire.com/jeep/tech/body/j10flatbed/

Hopefully that should give you all the info you need on the how-to. Just be creative in changing the metal floor for wood.
