Question 05 F150 5.4 4x4 rear and front axle code breakdown

Hi guys, I have been reading through these forums since I bought my truck and have found them really help full. I do not know what type of axle i have on this truck, 8.8, 9.75 its got 3.73 with limited slip in the back but I'm still unsure of which axle I have. The rear axle's code says V953R and 3L73 9 75 4M22. The front says 988G 50060253C. Can someone please tell me what these mean???

The reason is that I found out that this truck's limited slip is a piece of **** and have decided to put a locker on it, but I don't even know what type of axle I have.

Another question is that I can't find the locker that I want. Does someone make a mechanical locker similar to that of the one GM uses in their trucks? the G80 I think. That would be more or less of what I want to get. I don't want an electronic one or a ratcheting one. I would like something that senses that the wheels are slipping and then bam it locks. I have seen one that Eaton or Detroit makes that has helical gears on it but I don't know how good those are or exactly how it works.

Oh well I would appreciate it if some could help me out with this, thanks.

you have a 3.73 LS gearset

9.75 axle out back
8.8 reverse cut up front

easiest way to determine axle size is the engine size.

4.6 gets 8.8 rear
5.4 gets 9.75 rear

both get a 8.8 reverse cut up front

the lockers are subjective...I'd recommend a True Trac. My OEM LS is working great with my Supercharger...and offroad as well

Tylus is correct on axle sizes. Detroit makes an excellent locker. That's what the Nascar guys use on the 9 inch rear ends. If they can take what a cup car dishes out they should be able to take what our trucks give it. I have had pretty good luck with Ford's Traction-Loc set up. But sometimes they do get out of the factory with the clutches set too loose. They aren't that difficult to rebuild nor that expensive to do if you can do it yourself.

sweet, at least i know now what i have. now the next thing is to try to find a locker for it. i wish i did not need to but the limited slip that is has really sucks and the truck only has 54,000 miles too. it does not even look like its been abused but i'll see what i can find.

thanks a lot guys.

Try something cheap first

Add some friction modifier to the rear fluid. The prior owner may have changed the fluid and not added any

Yeah well thats my next step, I'm doing that next week and hopefully it helps enough that I don't have to put a locker but then again with my luck it probably wont happen.

Anyways thanks.
