Have a new Expedition EB Max with a 33.5 gal tank. Couple of weird issues driving me crazy. When we fill and reset the trip milage it tells 425 miles to empty and gas guage goes to full. Within 20 miles the gas guage is going down is is down to half by 100 miles. Last Expedition we had would go 100 miles without coming off of full (and drop rapidly after that . The message center tells me I'm running low on fuel as the tank goes to empty, and have X miles to empty. Yesterday it was 8 miles to empty, but when we filled, it took 27.8 gallons. So the message center registers the fact that it should go over 400 miles on a tank...but then bombs out. Dealer tells me to "consider it a reserve" I haul a camper and 3 kids in this truck regularly and need to be able to trust how much fuel I have.

Any ideas?

Give it a while. Mine was wildy inaccurate for the first month or two. Now it's good. If it still persists, take it in.

 

The book claims the "miles to empty" is based on the last 500 miles of fuel use. If that was city (or towing) driving the miles will drop at that rate even on the turnpike with no load. I think you can reset the logic to a default rate with a complete power disconnect, but it's otherwise a learning process.

We have the 28 gallon tank and I routinely only squeeze 22 gallons in there when "empty." Sounds like the same "reserve" you have.

If I read your post correctly, you stated that the GAUGE itself is also going down much faster than expected or stated another way, the GAUGE is indicating a fuel quantity less than what is actually available.

If this is the case, that would also affect the message center information. And, if this is the case, shame on your dealer because this is probably no more than a defective fuel sensor OR a leaking fuel sensor float. Both items are located inside the gas tank.

 

Thanks for the replies. Dealer indicated the next step is to take the dash apart to get to the message center and guage. Seems extreme to me...I thought check what is in the tank first. Will give it time and see if it auto corrects. Just seems a car so advanced should be able to really tell me how much fuel is left.

 

You only have to take off two sections of the dash to remove the speedo cluster. I have done it in 5 minutes.

 

I have a 08 EL (purchased last summer) and the gas gauge comes off full within 20 miles of a fill-up, but seems to stay around half for a longer time than I would expect. The gauge was between 1/2 and 1/4 today and I put in 14 gallons. I guess we have a nice reserve built in but who wants to see how far it gets you when you not sure of the next pit stop?
