I'd say stick with the stock dual manifolds, that are almost as good as a header and they are free. With a little porting and polishing, they WILL flow as good as headers. If you insist on a header, Clifford makes a good one, for about $180 or somewhere like that. I went with the single outlet header for more of the low-end torque.

the noticible differece will be the sound,, straight pipes no cats mufflers= LOUD AS HELL, but performance will increase dotn get liek massive sise pipe or you wont have enoupgh back pressure, get 2 1/4 or 2 1/2

OK, I think I will run the duals straight out the stock dual manifold.(people tell me I can get a V8 sound out of it? I will run a 2 1/2 straight pipe I think with some big tips. I will be doing this along with a # 19 fuel injector upgrade. Should I drill a hole in one of the pipes for that "smog" tube? Witch one or should I try to split that among the two, or crimp it off and forget about it? I live in Wisconsin No laws unless I get nailed on the road and they look...

300-6 Headers
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 06-Apr-02 AT 03:18 AM (EST)]I have had a 300-6 and a buddy has had two. I hate to tell you that no matter what you do the 6 will never sound like an 8. The best you can do is run a SINGLE exhaust of about 2-1/4 or 2-1/2" size. Use the stock split type exhaust manifold with a little porting. Run them into the stock Y pipe and knock the catalytic stuff out of that first cat. Then run your exhaust back from there. I would use TWO mufflers in series. Run a good glasspack first then a good quiet flowmaster after it. Two different types of mufflers to produce different effects on the exhaust note. The trick to make a six sound good is to smooth those pulses out and split them up into a mellow rumble. If you want to experiment just install the glasspack first and see what it sounds like (I am afraid it will be like your "dump truck"). If you run duals on a six you do not have enough gas pulses to mellow the sound and it makes the "six" sound worse. Like a bloody "farting" dump truck! I know, I have heard them.
Always cut the end of your exhaust pipe off at an angle.

I beg to differ on what the exhaust note can sound like on the I-6.
I heard one with headers, solid lifter cam, 4V carb and intake, and dual exhaust all the way back. I must say I was VERY impressed with how it sounded! Not only did the 300hp motor sound like a v8, but it also sounded like a drag racing v8! Dead serious on this one. I will never again doubt what these motors are capable of! If I have a chance to buy another I-6, I will, and put money into that motor.

I do like the 300-6, mine was (and still is) a very sweet running machine. A buddy has it now. Unfortunately mine had the OEM carb setup and my buddy had the FI setup. Both of us experimented with getting a decent sound out of a STREET machine which is what I believe this man has. I too have heard many swamp buggies with that motor running full out that sounded GREAT! But on a street machine motor with any reasonable street cam, much less an OEM job, they sound like a six, but can be improved. I have heard that there are people that have put on custom cross flow heads and all sorts of things. That motor can really be awakened, much like the Ford 400. It is a great motor, one of Ford's BEST!
Have fun!
