OK I have a 81 f-150 I am rebuilding a 351 winsor no for state inspection the truck it self with the straight 300 6 in has emission crap on it like egr aif pump stuff like that. now for when I rebuild my 351w do I have to get a intake that take a EGR valve and do i have to make sure it has all the emission stuff that cam on the straight 6 goes on the v8?

so what your sayiong is I have to have the emission crap on the truck to get it inspected there is now way I can get around this problem like buying a motor in the early or late 70 ?

 

To be legal you have to have what the truck came with for that model year. That is the reason I bought my 78 , no cats and major smog junk. The year of the motor doesn't matter ,truck year does. One way around this is to register classic or antique as they don't reguire emission inspection. Only thing is you are limited to how much you can drive it. Hope this helps.

Depending on what part of the great commonwealth of Pennsylvania you reside the emission regulations are different. I happen to live in Blair county where as of now the final decision of whether or not your truck will pass ultimately lies with the inspector. Take for instance my 1979 Bronco. This vehicle originally came with a 351M and NO emission equipment. Even though the state says it did. I bought it new and have been the only owner. I have since replaced the 351M with a 71 460 and 2 1/2 inch dual Flowmaster system. I have my PA inspection license but do not issue my own stickers. The shop I take it to states that anything that has under 5000 miles per year is exempt from emission testing. But the state says that to pass the safety inspection a vehicle must have the emission equipment that came from the factory or a proper replacement. The state also says that the original exhaust system (or equivalent) must be used and that the tire size must not be larger than original. Yeah right! If you live in one of I think 5 areas that requires tailpipe testing things are a lot more strict. Also vehicles with classic titles are emission exempt but have restrictions as to modifications and how much you can actually drive your vehicle. You need to check out these before you can change your vehicle to classic status. It is a real bi--- to change it back to normal.

 

what beast said is right on the money about are great emissions testing ..but the best thing to do is get everthing to make it as it came for that year from the factory ...but im not saying thats all shops fallow all the rules..so look around and talk to a few shop might be able to slip it by

 

well I live in butler county and right now the shops just check if the components are their but they do not have to work but the exaust has to have cats on. right now the truck has EGR valve and a air pump. so what your saying is I have to find a intake that takes a EGR and a carb that eccepts emission crap to.

 

Going through a similar thing with a 78 F250 I bought from an FTE member in WV. I t had no emissions crap on it except the fuel tank evap canister so the garage looks up the state book for that modle year and all there book said it had cat and smog pump and egr valve. Guy at the gaage says it has to be there but not work. But to get around this I wrote a letter saying I have owned it for a year and put less then five thousand miles on it.
So how can I punch out the cats?

 

It is better to take the cats off before you gut them. That way you be sure no cat guts get stuck in your muffler. Then just use something like a piece of old pipe or someother steel thing (i got a shift lever off an old dodge) and a BFH and start pounding the guts out. Make sure you get them all out and be sure to wear at least a dust mask and safety glasses. cats contain platinum, nasty stuff to get into you. have fun.

This is how I have the EGR look! Slap on manifold, throw carb on an run a vacuum line to nowhere!

My 78 F150 was over 6,000 (6,040) so I only need ; gas cap check, EGR visual, and Pcv visual. Allegheny county strict laws!

F250army45d, Not sure what he was looking at in book, THAT book is hard to understand, Dig into the book and find all regs for truck with gross weight. Forget about calling PA Hotline, They ARE clueless

 

Grab an instrument cluster at the bone yard. It takes about 15 minutes to swap them out twice a year. " Yes sir, I rarely use it sir, only drive it maybe 1500 miles a year sir ". I ran an 89 Econoline like that for about 5 years. Cat was plugged when I bought it. A new cat cost more than it was worth. Gutted the cats and bought a cluster for $10. Way cheaper.

Yeah lots of things could work and I don't think they no at the garage what the book says or they don't understand it. For now I'm going with the exempt letter then later down the road ill make things right back to factory. I have been looking for parts and found most things new.

 

If you're working on emission parts for that highboy in your sig you might want to do some research before you spend any more money. I've been told that any vehicle 77 or older is now exempt under PA law. I got this from a friend who owns a shop that does emission inspections.

I found out about the 77 and older clause when I bought my 72 F100 since it was registered in Allegheny county.

 

Guess I should add all my vehicles to my sig. I was talking about my 78. And from what I read online at the PA department of vehicles its 76 and older are emission exempt unless they recently updated it in the past six months.

 

I'm gonna do some more reading on that. At the time I got that info I was researching the requirements for antique plates.
