As someone that enjoys the oddball, offbeat, and otherwise unique roadside attractions, I found this particularly interesting. I've passed thru Baxterville a bunch of times, but for all of my internet searching I can't find just exactly where this site is located...which I'm sure is intentional.

WLOX (Biloxi/Gulfport) did a three part special on this some time ago and before then, I had no clue that this took place, and just about a 30min drive from my front door at that.

Anyone else aware that this happened?

I've got a friend that's from Baxterville, he's told me stories about kids that were born after the blast how they were disfigured and retarded and how alot of people down that way got cancer. I do believe the government covered up a bunch of stuff from the blast. That's what the government does best.

 

I vaguely remember the second, ( I was 8) a lot was going on in the world at the time. Just begining a relationship with news papers that extended past the comics page.

I've seen some stories about both detonations here & there over the years and once drove past one of the fences while bumbling around S. Ms looking for a service call location. Was always a little miffed that the US gov took advantage of Ms's apparent second class citizenship at the time to actually set off nukes here.
