Pics of IWE solenoid
hi all, after digging through some threads about IWE's and solenoids, i found that a few people were curious as to what the "new" solenoid looked like. So, since i had to replace mine today, i figured i would post some pics of the 2 to compare.
New style: (Ford p/n: 6L3Z-9E441-A)
Side by side:
Old style: (you can even see some ice on mine)

I have been getting way too familier with my 2004 FX4 4 wheel drive issues. I believe my original soledoid is working as I get about 20 lbs on both actuators when not in 4 wheel drive and atmosphere in 4 wheel drive.
I can get the front hubs to engage if a draw a vacuum on the port on the right hub that runs between the two actuators (which I would assume should be atmosphere when engaged). I am guessing the actuator cannot engage the hub because it is dirty or worn out. Can somebody help a brother out?

Sneaky parts guy trying to clear his old parts out!
You might want to fab a cover of your own to keep water/ice off of the new part. I'd try a cut out from some smallish plastic bottle bottom. The bottle bottom would be the top of the cover...and a cutout at the front for the plug-in.
Is this what your using?... Most like it.

My truck needed the solenoid AND IWEs replaced to fix the problem.

twfish, All the (this forum year group) 4x4s have the solenoid. All the 4x4s are "shift on the fly" (for 4HI only), even the floor shifter types. All the 4x4s have an electric shift motor on the transfer case.

Not sure I ordered it through an online dealer and even questioned why the one with the bracket was less the one w/o. Dealer had both and thepack appeared to have a date code from this year??? I think I will try to fab up some out of some sheet Aluminum just in case.

- I suspect the (old style/original) solenoid failed due to the water/ice issue. I "discovered" the left front was having a problem when I heard the classic high-speed grinding noise intermittantly in 2wd. While trouble-shooting, I discovered the right front IWE held no vacuum at all... when I took it off I found the spring was broken/jammed, the grease was black and dried, and the diaphram was torn. The left side IWE had a very slow vacuum leak too. AFTER I relpaced both IWEs the noise returned. I replaced the solenoid and "presto", works like new for almost two years now. Both of those threads have my worried questions and triumphant remarks strung though them. (and several other guys' too.)
...the IWEs are NOT submersion proof. I'm not sure what caused the right front IWE failure. I'm the third owner and the truck only had 44K when I got it. The truck has no other issues of any kind.
