Smile 1961 Ford Unicab f-250 4x4. Help

I have just brought home a 61’ F250 unicab 4x4… The truck is a true untouched 51,000 mile barn find, it has been sitting in the same spot since 1969 and over all it in amazing condition. The Truck is a custom cab model, sports the great looking red and white two tone paint, a 292 V8, factory installed select air A/C, power breaks, steering, spot light, and a radio. am trying to find out more information on this truck such as production #’s and just how rare it really is. Any help would be great! fficeffice" /><O></O>

there is no door tag, and there is no evidence of there ever being one... only a glove box tag, it reads. WB=122 , color=JM, Date (is blank) M=F250, trans=F, Axel =24, DSO=4012. I'll get some pictures posted soon, this this is a little time capsul.

Welcome to FTE

No Warranty Plate on the left door face on 1961/62's.

It's where you found it...on the inside of the glove box door.

F25CK172095

F25 = F250 2WD Pickup ** (If the series code was F26 = then it would be a factory installed 4WD).

C = 292 2V

K = Kansas City Assembly Plant

172095 = Assembled May 1961

122" Wheelbase

JM: J = Rangoon Red / M = Colonial White

F250 2WD Pickup / 7500 lb. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating

F = Warner T98 4 Speed Manual Transmission

24 = Spicer (Dana) 60 / 4.56-1 / non Limited Slip

4012 = Incomplete DSO code. The code (in this case) should be 6 digits, the first two are missing.

** This truck was assembled as a 2WD. IMHO, it was then sent out by Ford to be converted to 4WD, why the DSO code is (supposed to be) 6 digits.

With a 2 digit DSO code, the truck was not a special order. The 2 digits only refer to the district sales office the truck was ordered from.

With a 6 digit DSO, the truck is a Domestic Special Order.

The first two digits are for the Ford District Sales Zone Office where the original selling dealer ordered the truck from.

The last 4 digits is the special order number for whatever special equipment Ford (had) installed (after the fact). In this case the 4WD conversion.

Any Uni with 4WD is super rare as Ford did not offer one unless the customer so ordered it.

Then it was sent out by Ford to someone to be converted.

Marmon-Herrington & NAPCO are companies that did 4WD conversions. Most Ford 4WD conversions were done by Marmon-Herrington, located in Indianapolis, Indiana.

I have all the 1961 F100/350 production figures. There are no FoMoCo production figures listed for F250 4WD Uni's.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ford did not install A/C in these trucks, it was a Ford dealer installed accessory (as was the spotlight). I'd like to see a pic of the A/C unit that's mounted under the dash.

From that, I can tell you exactly what years the A/C was used in.

Select-Aire: 1961/62 is one style, 1963/64 is another, 1965/66 is different again.

btw: 1966 Shelby GT 350H (Hertz) total production: 936 units.

Welcome from Louisiana! Sounds like a nice find. Curious about the PS and PB as it is my understanding that these weren't available until the 65-66 years.

Power steering and brakes were not available factory installed on trucks before 1966.

These were dealer installed accessories only, as was the spotlight, outside mirrors, air conditioning and other stuff.

P/S specific parts examples:

COTF-13A805-C... Horn Button-Standard Cab / Use with P/S / Fits: 1957/60 F100/600.

COTF-13A805-F .. Horn Ring-Custom Cab / Use with Power Steering / Fits: 1959/60 F100/600.

Both these parts have the words Power Steering marked on them.

Outside mirrors, even when they became standard equipment were not factory installed. The dealers installed every last one of them, thru at least 1997.

I haven’t been home before dark all this week so there has been no chance to take pictures… I will get some pictures taken of the odd truck tomorrow and get them posted (if I can figure out how to). Who ever bought this truck must have tricked it out just how they wanted it, and they were willing to spend some money. One more question… are the spring perches in a different location on a 4x4 verse a 2x4, I guess I would assume so. if they are in a deferent location on the frame would the aftermarket company rivet them back in to the new locations, or bolt them in???

Look up in the left corner at User CP, click edit gallery, and load your photos there. Anyone at anytime can click your user name and see them.

A 4X4 retro could call for different spring locations.

I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings.

The A/C badge on the door was originally installed on the front doors of 1957/59 passenger cars: B7A-19B568-A.

It's not listed for anything later than 1959, and this part number isn't listed in the truck parts catalog, so it was strictly a car part.

The A/C unit on this truck is not Select-Aire, in fact, it's not even a Ford A/C at all, it's from the aftermarket sector. If it was a Ford A/C, the bezel would be so marked.

This unit's bezel says PARKOMAT on it.

The Select-Aire dash unit bezels were all chromed steel, the dash bezels used 1958/62 have a slight V-shape to them with two horizontal registers, one on each side.

The units used 1963/64 are flat with two horizontal registers, the bezels used 1965/66 resemble the Mustang units with a concave bezel with 4 round registers.

This type of A/C compressor was used in Nashes, Hudson, Packards & Studebakers. it's not the type Ford used.

It appears to be a horizontally opposed 2 cylinder type, prolly from Lehigh who also had a V type 2 cylinder compressor that was used on 1956/57 Lincolns.

The spotlight isn't genuine Ford either. It's not from any Ford car or truck. It appears to a Unity, and if so, will be marked that way.

The grille guard is also aftermarket.

While all these accessories could have been dealer installed, none of them are genuine Ford.

I cannot explain why the door mounted Select-Aire bezels are present.

They could have been added by the dealer when the A/C was installed, but the A/C unit isn't from Ford.

Maybe the dealer added those badges to fool the customer into thinking he got a Ford A/C unit.

nmgt350h, WHAT A FIND, irregardless of the non genuine Ford parts on it. it's under the hood that gets me most. Bill ND sure you can shed some light. There is a single cyl air compressor mounted right side of engine also a alcohol evaporator bottle to prevent air line freeze ups. Is the engine color correct for the truck or are we seeing an engine from a larger truck that may have had air over hydraulic brakes? Don't know if Ford ever offer that but IH did. Was compressor an option for tire repair/inflation? IH did tho trans PTO mounted. What is between brake booster and LH hood hinge? maybe a vacuum storage tank? What is on the RH fender well? look like a cruise control or to my eye a DR series/paralell switch. Bet this truck has some history, wonder what its purpose in life was.

The A/C Compressor isn't from any year Ford.

The only A/C compressors I've ever seen like this one were on a 1955 Nash and several Packard V8's.

The 1955/56 Nashes, Hudson's, Packard's and 1956 Studebaker Golden Hawks all used the Packard V8, so it stands to reason that all would have the same A/C compressor.

1960/65: All Ford engine blocks and heads were painted black. The valve covers were different colors, because Ford did that so body shops and garages could look at the covers, tell what size the engine was. No kidding!

This system was first implemented in 1952, Ford dealers used to pass out a pamphlet to shops, that had all the covers colors listed and what those colors translated to.

This system had become redundant by 1965. 1966 was the first year the entire engine was painted Ford Corporate Blue.

I don't recall what color the valve covers were on truck 292 engines in 1961, and I don't have one of those pamphlets, tho I wish I did.

It appears from the waterpump, intake manifold and the area below the heads that someone painted the entire engine yellow...that was not something Ford did.

It's not a Marmon-Herrington 4WD conversion becase M-H installed plaques on the dash to show how the system should be used.

The OP posted the DSO code, but he only posted 4 digits of it.

The DSO code is either 2 digits or 6.

I'll have to look at those engine pics further before I pass judgement on what some of those parts are for.

The right/left valve covers have some sort of an adapter in the center with hoses running from them...that's not Ford's doing.

EDIT: That box like affair next to the left hood hinge appears to be a vacuum reservoir tank. The small round can on the right fender apron looks like another vacuum reservoir tank.

The glass jar mounted on the right side by the core support looks exactly like the old style glass windshield washer fluid bottles that were used on 1940's/50's cars.

Whoever owned this rig at one time was another Mr. Gadget!
