Ford 6.6 Diesel swap ideas
Hello,
I have a good running 6.6 liter Ford turbo diesel that me and some friends want to swap into somthing. I would like it to be a Ford pickup of some kind, But I am open to suggestions Here is the general plan:
The engine has an SAE #3 bell housing. It is currently hooked to an AT545 trans that needs work. I want to hook it up to a manual trans, so I would need a flywheel, clutch (hydraluic) and of course a trans. Does anyone know a good cheap trans that would work for this? We would use the divorced transfercase from a duece and a half for 4 wheel drive.
The second issue is weight. With the trans, I estimate this engine to weigh about 1300-1500 lbs, so I think a 3/4 or 1 ton with a dana 60 would be needed.
Third issue is length. I havent taken too many measurements, but the cylinder head is 42 inches long roughly.
Since this engine is mechnical, getting it to run would be the easiest part.
As soon as the weather clears up, I will take better measurements.
So, What would you guys swap it in?
Thanks in advance.
(My dream would be to have this engine into a 1992-1997 F-350 crew cab, or an 1978 body style truck)
edit to add:
I would not be opposed to doing some mod's to the firewall to get it to fit)

It's a great idea!
The newer the truck, the easier it will be to fit. My measurement for a DT466 head was 41". Should be pretty close. Weight, last I heard was right at 1300, maybe 1330 or something like that. For a trans, you may be able to use a Deuce, but I think they were a #2 bellhousing. Another idea is a 5 spd Clark, RT6610 or similar (small) 10-13 spd. I think there's even adapters to mate an SAE to a Ford, Dodge, GM bell pattern.

More?
There's also Fabco transfer cases, and axles. But by then, you would have an F700. In the power end, you have tons of things you can do, your limit being your wallet. Lots of Fords still being used in tractor pulls, so performance parts are available(pumps, injectors, turbos). Last I remember, they were a front sump, which may pose a problem with the axle. A New Holland tractor dealer can tell you if you can get a rear sump for it, if you need it(if it's not what you need). Make sure you have hydroboost brakes, so you have enuf stopping power!

ok got some generic measurements.
The engine is rear sump.
From front of engine fan to back of head, it is very close to 50 inches long.
From the front motor mount to the top highest point of engine is 35 inches. I can always do a body lift.
Width probably won't be an issue.
However the drivetrain of this prospective truck will be extremely long.
Can somebody measure thier V-10? That would be awesome.
Happy thanksgiving everyone!
Thanks again

You might want to pull out the 460 first.
It would be a tight fit, but really careful planning and measuring will tell you for sure. I still think the 6.6 is a tad shorter than the 7.8's block, but I'm just one person.
They should be fairly easy to find. Look in a truck bone yard that deals with buses, and there should be some. There's a place in Fresno called Valley Truck(valtruck.com) that regularly has them, and for a decent price(Gotta call Larry to get a good deal). Dont go by the online listed price. The Ford 6.6 and the IH's DT360 arent very good sellers, because they pull those out for the bigger engine. Here's a 6.6, then a 7.8
