Hopefully someone can help me out with this. On my 78 F-250 4x4 I added hydroboost brakes so with the extra pressure the input seal at the gear box decided to give up on life. Ive gotten as far as removing the steering shaft and the rubber dust seal at the input shaft. Whats the trick to get the seal out? Theres no snap ring or anything to remove. There are 4 bolts that mount the end housing (where the hoses connect) to the main body and it looks like if I were to take that off I could get to the seal from the back side and pound it out. I just wanna make sure Im on the right track here.

This is turning into a learning experience. I removed the 4 bolts and separated the gear box. So now Ive got the input side of the gear box off and at least its a little easier to work on. I found theres a metal dust shield and I got that off. Then I found the snap ring and removed that. Now Im trying to figure out how to get the actual seal out. I did find that my ps return hose was kinked so that was probably why the input seal blew in the first place.

 

Well with the help of google I figgered it out. After you remove the snap ring you put the housing back together and hook up the pressure line and plug the return line. Crank the motor and the pressure will push the seal out. If I woulda realised there was a metal dust cover and snap ring I wouldnt have had to split the gear box. You learn something new every day.
