Hello,

I have been chasing this problem for a couple years.
When the outside temp is HOT, I get the MIL and it gives me the P1407 (EGR Valve Solenoid).

When the outside temp got cold. The MIL would go off... Code cleared itself.

I had another post on ford-trucks about a year ago and some nice guy told me to test everything by probeing the leads that go into the solenoid. One should be hot, the other floating ground. I validated. I was also instructed to ground the "floating ground" lead and the engine should cough.. Which it did.

My suspicion is that the connection point some where between the solenoid and the computer is intermittent. The cold outside is allowing the connection to once again be made for when the computer tells the EGR to go on.

1. Has anyone else seen this?
2. Anyone know where the computer is and how difficult it would be to re-seat the connector
3. Anyone have any idea what a new computer would cost.

Once again. 97 Explorer P1407 that goes off when the temp drops.

You didn't state all the info so here's the quick list,

PCM is in the firewall, 4.0L and 5.0L high left of center.

97 4.0L EVR vacuum regulator at pin #33 on computer (pcm) connector, brown/pink wire, (pin #47 vin "X" and SOHC engine vin "E")

5.0L located at pin #47 PCM connector, brown/pink wire.

You will find a picture of the PCM connector with pin locations near the very bottom of this page, (go way down, you want the 104 pin connector near the bottom, not the 60 pin connector mid way down)

Oh and it is very unlikely you need a new computer, they rarely go bad. Exhaust every other possibility first before even considering replacing it. If you find you do need one don't buy "new", just buy one from a junk yard.

I saw the brown with pink.. going to the solenoid. Grounded this and
made the engine cough.. It would be grand to just reseat and make this go away.. Or, check the wire to make sure it did not open..

Where is this PCM stashed... ? Thanks again.

Here maybe this will be easier, its slid into a slot in the firewall, all you will see is the harness connector for the most part.

Thanks.. First off I wrote the wrong error. It really was a P1409 MIL code. But with the diagram above and the link to the site that provides the pin out for the EEC connector and Dan's reference to the PIN for my vehicle I was able to find the brown/pink wire in the wire nest and the OPEN spot in the wire. It was right near the connector to the Solenoid and with a bit of work I was able to cut and splice a fix. MIL has been off for the last day. And I hope next summer the error does not return.
