my father has a 2006 f250 extended cab 8ft bed with a towing package,camper and snow plow package which stiffins the ride really really good.. almost feels as if theres not shocks when you hit a bump but when weight is added rides like a charm. ANYWAY hes decieded he wanted to buy a trailer for his 32ft boat which weights 14000 pounds and wants to tow it to south fl for the winters.. what would you guys recomend for the ride.. i was thinking an air ride kit. but not sure if it will need it due to the exta leaf springs it already has from ford? o its gas btw.. he bought the truck before he even thought about towing the boat.. otherwise it woulda be desiel..
the trailors 38 ft aluminum I beam tripple axle with brakes. the truck already has a brake controller

has anyone towed that much weight a long distance before?

well I have towed 9,000 for 400 miles when I had my 06 F250 with extra springs. Had 5.4 and it handled it find. Loves the RPMS though and mpg was only about 6. But I was headen north and uphill in the mountains.
I honestly dont think you would need to worry about any squating.

Is it the 5.4L or the 6.8L V10? It doesn't really matter that much, since the max towing weight for even the 6.8L is still 12,500. It's too much boat for the truck. The truck will tow it, but you will be over the rated tow weights. Nuff said! Here's the link to the Trailer Life tow rating guides:

6.8L or 6.0L, doesn't matter, he's limited to 12,500.

 

sounds a bit much for a 350 dually to me. you better tell your dad he seriously needs to upgrade trucks immediatley. that will shorten the life of the vehicle immensily!

 

He will be exceeding his GrossCombinedVehicleWeight rating. If memory serves me right, his truck has a GCVW of 20-23,000 lbs. Take his truck fill it with fuel and all the other stuff he will travel with and go to a truck scale and WEIGH IT. That is the only way to know how much trailer you can pull. don't beat a burro into the ground expecting it to do the job of a mule. it will tow it fine. Just take your time and drive like a grandma. I have towed way more then that with a v6 half ton. Long trailer is as stable as they come. Don't worry be happy.

 

Yes, I have towed about that much weight many times for a long distance... which is exactly why I have DRW. My advice: Get a weight distributing hitch and don't have much fuel, water or supplies in the boat. Also, be certain to have all the tires at nearly full inflation and re-pack the trailer wheel bearings.

I have 3 superduties, they all pull 18,000 lbs regurlarly. The one I use the most has 279,000 miles on it and 70 % of the mileage has had atleast 12,000 lbs behind it and most of the time 18,000 lbs. I pull my tractor around farming, on a 32 ft, float. Combined is about 18,250. 2 of mine are single wheels and the other is a dually. They all do fine. If it shortens the life of the truck, I wonder how long mine would go that has 279,000 miles on it. Anyway, you will be fine, I just wouldnt try to drive 80. It will do it, but you cant really stop it real well, if need be.

 

It'll handle it if u take it easy. I hauled 16,000 lbs of mink 250 miles a few days ago and made it just fine, although on my last trip with 4,000lbs I cracked an ERG cooler and spent 3 days stranded in a hotel. If u in a hot climate u may not have the same luck. Keep an eye on the temp gauges and u should be fine.

 

That is providing he has a good set of aftermarket gauges. Keeping an eye on the stock gauges isn't going to help you out much. Might as well try to wing it if your going to just use those things.

we have already done that trip a few times. and the cost of gas on the water is wayy to much now.. were from nj it takes about 6-8 days running inshore and offshore...

well a buddy of his just offered to take the trip with him and he said he wouldnt mind towing it.. his friend has a 07 f350 desiel so hes better off with that, but hes gona use his truck for the local trip marina to the house when we take it out of the water.. thanks for your advice guys

 

12,500 is just at the hitch. With fifth wheel it can handle nearly 16,000.

Edit: just seen you have 5.4. I don't believe that has the same high ratings
