I think you're confusing the camshaft synchronizer with the distributor.
There is no distributor. The Synchronizer installs where the distributor (on old models) used to, and is used by the computer to determine camshaft position. The computer, in turn, uses this as PART of its calculations for ignition timing and fuel injector timing.
With that being said, positioning this properly is extremely critical. There are two methods... you can use a static timing tool (look for camshaft synchronizer alignment tools) while installing it with the engine at Top Dead Center.
The other method involves using a multi-channel scope and overlaying the camshaft waveform pattern over the crankshaft waveform pattern, and adjusting it with the engine idling until they intersect at a specific point. There is a 17-page TSB from Ford explaining exactly how to do this, but I have a feeling you'll be following the first method.

Good advice so far. But I'm going to nit-pick just a little:
1. On some older DIS systems there is still a SPOUT connector. However, even on these systems you cannot adjust the timing. It is set at 10* BTDC from the factory and is controlled dynamically by the PCM.
2. Newer EDIS systems (as opposed to DIS) do not use the camshaft position sensor signal for spark timing; instead, the CMP signal is only used for fuel injection timing.
