I am going to replace the factoory Pirelli Scorpion STR 255/70-18 tires that came on my 2007 Expedition EL Limited with probably the Cooper Discoverer ATR's. We live on a farm in Michigan and need the snow and mud traction of an A/T tire more than the couple of MPG's we'd get from a highway tire.

The spec's on the Cooper 275/70-18 is 33" tall and 9" of tread width.....The Pirelli's are about 32" tall.

What do you think? Will they fit? You think I'll be happy with these tires? They have a E load rating. I like that because we do a lot of heavy towing with stock trailers and we usually have all 4 kids and 2 adults when we travel with animals. I know we'll give up some ride smoothness, but I should get a little better tread life.

I would stick with the same size, different. Brand. Having a larger tire looks strange.

 

Thanks for the reply, but I'm not overly concerned about the cosmetics of the tires....more the functionality. I think going with a slightly taller tire might offset the mileage loss due to the added traction of the A/T tire.

 

I am in agreement with you, I also plan on replacing the Pirelli's that came on my 07 Expedition. I have 22,000 miles on the tires and they are better than 3/4 gone. I have talked to quite a few people that have had Cooper Discover ATR's and are very happy with them as far as traction and wear. I think you will b pleased with them. Just my 2 cents worth.......

 

I've got 25K miles on the Pirelli's and mine are pretty worn too, even though I've rotated them twice. Hopefully, the Cooper ATR's that I want will fit!

I rotate every 5K and this seems to help the tires last longer.

As for the taller tire giving you more MPG, that is up to debate, the extra weight and rolling resistance may negate the fuel savings.

 

Take a look at my profile, mine are jsut under 33" and about 11 inches wide I think, maybe closer to 12, never really measured, but they fit, although not by much, but that is full suspension travel, the 4x4 shop used their suspension lift to make sure.

 

I'd say a 33 should fit but I'd steer clear of cooper (pooper) tires. I know 3 people who have had them and loved them till they were 50% worn and starting going out of round, thumping and just generally rough all around.

 

Has anyone tried the Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo's?
I had very good luck with them on my 02 Explorer and I'm thinking about using them once the Conticraps go.

shows the results of there testing with third party review. Plus do a search on google, motor trend and a few others tested the tires as well.

 

forgot to say, 33's will probably be tight without the truxxx leveling kit installed, especially with 18's, you will most likely get rubbing when your suspension is compressed.

 

That is true, mine was ridiculously close without the truxxx kit. But I didnt have any rubbing, but it was a little close for comfort. My tires are a bit under 12" wide, I measured today, but I have a huge offset with my rims, so most of the extra is outside the fender, but 100% no rub on the inside of the front, full steer.

 

Your expedition looks good. I need to get some new pics up of mine.

 

Thanks Carbon, As far as the truxxx lift, I would consider extending the rear brake lines when you install it, they end up pretty tight and are almost the limiting component in the suspension loop, I didn't put new ones on mine, I am an instant gratification kinda guy, so I just did it anyway.

 

LOVE them tires! Put a set on my 03 Expedition and am on my second set on my Avalanche.

I'd recommend those tires to the OP before the E-rated Coopers.
