Does anyone have any info on the availability or specifications on the 1964 F100 with the 427 twin 4 barrel carb? Any and all information is appreciated.

 

What proof is there that this would be factory?

 

I have never heard of any ford truck having a 427 from the factory.

 

All 64 F100s came from the factory with 292's

Wasnt there a thread a while back on some special built ford racing pickup with a 427? I remember seeing some photos of the pickup, the question up for debate would be was it factory Ford or built by someone else. I remember the pickup being white with red bucket seats inside with a 4 speed on the floor.

You have to go back a ways to find that thread.

There was a reason The Doors had an album called "Strange Days" in the '60s. Strange things did happen, and this 427 8V truck was one of them. Ford put (or had someone put) 427s into darn near everything.

The old thread shows the truck in current condition, it being a "garage find" item.

This was a 6 cylinder truck off the assembly line and still had the stock exhaust hanging underneath iirc.

It was not a production truck, neither were the 427 Thunderbolt Fairlanes, the Mustangs, Comets, what have you. Later on things like the the '66 ('67?) Fairlane were "production" but very limited. Galaxies got 427s as an option you could find in the owners manual....

But you knew all that.

The XL project truck left the factory with a 6 in it and was built to as it stands with Ford support, from what I can read up on it.

Why don't you share with us what you know about the truck, and let's go from there.

The 427 is a FE family engine, the 352 another family engine was introduced to the truck in 65 replaced by the 360 in 68 and had a few 390s sprinkled in after 68.

Do you have good knowledge about the engine build, since you can't look at a FE and tell a 352 from a 428?

The XL left the line with out the engine in place. That is why the VIN has no engine letter stamped on the frame rail or on the door warranty tag (its a blank space).

DST built the truck under contract to FOMOCO and Ford raced the truck for a year. The current owner has had it since 1965 and has no plans to sell it. It is worth enough money to make Craig Jackson drool.....

If you root around the Chuck Brandt site link posted above you will see a factory ad for 1964 for XL trucks ordered through a ford dealer with The 427 and Sport Package (think Pre ranger) and the correct DSO order number to do the deal. As far as history can be researched through interview of the employees of DST no 64's were made (apperently trucks cannot go faster than cars so scuttlebut says the project got nixed). Tales of another 63 uni are out there but it to this day has not surfaced or been verified.

The uncovering of the truck from where it was parked in 66 till it was "rediscovered" is just one of those odd things. A question asked by Chuck Brandt on slick60s if any one had heard of it. Some extensive research on the part of Wayne Koscko of Delaware and she was found.

The XL was at SS06 in York Pa, and is undergoing a extensive search to recreate the original wedge engine with the correct parts. The owner after delivery from ford changed out the T10 4 speed for a B&M turbo Hydromatic and after gernading quite a few wedge motors placed an over the counter SOHC in it. the hammer marks are still on the firewall where he beat it back to clear the massive heads.

I have a bunch of pictures of it, have climbed all over it. Its a pretty neat feeling to sit in history.

I can confirm all that Garbz has said to be correct. I'll also add that the paint is in beautiful original condition, and the vinyl top is also original. I have never seen a Slick with a factory vinyl top other than that one.

Garbz' description is inaccurate in one respect, though.

He understated the thrill of just sitting in it - it cannot be over-described!

 

Ford never offered a vinyl roof as an option for an F100/350. But...Ford did offer a painted on "looks like a" vinyl roof as an option for 1967/72 F100/350's.

One of our SoCal/Hawaii Chapter members (fun_suv) has a 1968 F100 painted light blue with a factory applied spray on black "vinyl" roof. White was also available.

Some of the cars including Mustangs (HORRORS!) were available with these phony vinyl roofs.

 

I shot a 70's Cordova with that stuff back in 81-2? Have to agree, gawd awful looking. Worse was getting the OEM adhesive off the car's roof without grinding through the sheet metal LMAO!

 

The XL absolutely has a vinyl roof, the story of how Wayne found it is pretty remarkable. It was truly a cool experience to go and basically dig out a piece of Ford history, we cleaned out the bed even found a couple of dead cats, pushed it outside and washed it and pushed it back in. The best thing that happened was it rekindled Bill's interest in the truck. Bill is regisered here and is a member of the De. chapt.

after reading the artical, they mention falcon seats and a center console, has anyone tried replacing there bench seat with a set of falcon or even mustang seats? as for a center console, one could probably make one up out of wood or fiberglass. i would think that the seat mounts brackets would have to be modified to bolt to the floor. any inputs?
