Was recently talking to a guy who told me that there are 3 main places in the world that produce methanol. He said two were in China and the other one was in the U.S.-said they all produce 90% of the world's methanol. Anyone ever heard this before?

 

I know of 4 plants in the US alone, must be more...........

 

I live in Nashville TN. and the guy I was referring to is close. Where is the nearest place to us that makes it or better yet where is the best place to get it in bulk?

I am buying the methanol from a biodiesel solutions dealer in Mocksville NC for $190.00 for 55 gallons. thats the cheapest I've found it..

yeah he was, this place went to pieces when he passed. my family is close friends with the Earnhardts. racing isn't racing without "the man in black"

 

That doesn't sound right. IIRC methanol is produced during propane and NG refining. I thought all the gas refineries produced it.

We paid about $215/drum buying 6 drums a few months ago in S.C., but the price has come down again. We used to get it for $134/drum. Our supllier said the rapid increase was partly due the conversion of so many power plants to NG - the demand exceeded the supply for awhile. It appears to be stabilizing a bit now.

Kinda sucks we are still at the mercy of 'big oil', eh?
