I am changing the ignition module on my 95 f150 5.0. It is the fender mounted module,underneath the hood hinge. My truck is tall,no matter what I do,I can't get my head in there to look into the bolt holes to see the size/type of the head the bolts are(even tried my step stool,can't get a good angle to see in there),thought somebody might be able to give me a little info!! thanks,Ben

 

I used a thin wall 5.5mm nut driver out of an old electronicts service kit I have. There is an english equivelent, but I don't know what it is. Whatever you use its got to be thin.

 

the little bolts that hold the module on are 5.5mm. The socket I had almost fit but ended up tapping on the end to get it to sit in there. I removed the whole module & heat sink together, I think it was 3/8" that hold the headsink to the fender but I could be wrong, only ever swapped it once myself.

While you might be able to remove just the module from heat sink, you might want to remove the whole thing in one shot. Probaly easier and if the module was never changed, it'll be easier to clean off the old gel/goo that goes between the two pieces and apply the new stuff.

well,that figures. it probably is 5.5 mm,because that is the only one I don't have I did take the heat sink out with the module. looks like I get to go socket shopping tomorrow morning after work. The "goo" that is on there if it is original,does that need to be replaced? is it dielectric grease? my new motorcraft part did not come with any goo or dielectric grease. should I buy some to put in between the heat sink and the ignition module?

 

YES NO but that is what all of the books say to use but I would go to Raido Shack and get the White Thermal Zinc grease. YES

Also make sure they did not sell you the wrong module, If it is BLACK it is the right one and if it is GRAY take it back and get the right one.

Hope you found your socket. If I have the math right, it's the same as a 7/32
(.2165 vs .2187). Whatever you get, it has to have thin walls. Some places sell special sockets just for TFIs.

Your replacement TFI should have some of the correct goo with it. Otherwise the thermal grease should be good.

 

here are the parts #'s,or the #'s that are on the modules,not sure if they are the actual part #'s The old one i took out of the truck:f1sf-12a297-c1a,and the new one that I am going to put in the truck:5u2j-12a297-da. They are both black,but have different part #'s. will the new one still work in my truck?

 

Yes it will be OK but is there not a part number on the box or on your paper work.
I think the part number is 5U2Z-12A297-D but wanted to make sure.
The numbers you gave above off the part are drawing or engineering numbers.

 

well,here is something I just noticed. the # on the paperwork is the one you listed (5U2Z-12A297-D),and the # on the new module is the one i listed(5u2j-12a297-da). the only other # on the new module is c11hd.

On the sockets I just took one to the grinder and made it smaller.
Make sure you use a lot of White Thermal Zinc grease on it.
