engine code EBP-6015-1 ???

I have a '57 F100 3-speed with VIN: F10K7N12532

On the oil pan rail I found codes:
EBP-6015-1
87 J 10

On the same side of the engine, but up near the fron of the valve cover, there was a flat spot which looked double-stamped:
437 (large numbers above)
80 (smaller numbers, barely readable)

It is an inline 6 with firing order 1-5-3-6-2-4
Someone suggested it was a replacement I-6 from the 80's.
Anything you could tell me would reallyhelp me out.

Side Note: The crankshaft is shot, and I don't know whether I should do a rebuild, find a period-correct engine or swap in a more modern engine. I don't want to mod the trans, so please feel free to gimme your $.02!

F10 = F100

K = 272 2V

7 = 1957

N = Norfolk VA Assembly Plant

12532 = 1957

EBP-6015-1 1952/59 215/223 bare block casting number.

It is an inline 6 with firing order 1-5-3-6-2-4 It was originally a V8.

Someone suggested it was a replacement I-6 from the 80's. Uh huh, yeah right...someone suggested wrong!
Tell "someone" that: 1952/64 Ford 215, 223 and 262 I-6 engines have the intake & exhaust manifolds on the left (drivers) side.

All the 1965 and later 240/300 I-6's have the intake/exhaust manifolds on the right (passenger) side.

IF the letter K in the VIN is correct, this was originally a Y block 272 2V.

Does the VIN on the Warranty Plate (inside the glovebox door) match the VIN on the registration?

Thanks for the info...

The "someone" was referring to the E as an '80's code. Plus, the one-barrel carb was described as "newer" from a previous thread post to this forum.

In my picture gallery, you can see the manifolds (driver's side) as well as the carb.

The K in the VIN is true, but the 272 V8 is long gone, and I don't know what a Y block is so I have some homework to do.

The car's registration isn't known (owner abandoned truck), and there is no warranty plate in the glovebox. The VIN I have is from a riveted plate on the driver's door jamb.

Thanks!

Uh huh...E is a code from the 1980's, but not in this context.

If the engine was from the 1980's, the casting number could be E0TE, E3TE, E7TE, etc.

EBP is strictly from the 1950's, it ain't nothing else.

And it further proof was needed (which it ain't), with that carb sittin' on the LEFT side of the engine, it's a 215 or 223 from 1959 or earlier.

The block is '54/59, the head is '52/59. I can tell that because after 1959, the valve cover mounts differently.

1960/64: The head is drilled and tapped for the (quantity 8) 5/16" valve cover bolts. The valve cover has 8 holes around its perimeter.

1952/59: The head has two studs which protrude thru the cover.

I wish ppl who have NO KLEW would shut the &*&^& up. Either keep their opinions to themselves, or research first, before putting their mouth in motion!

NumberDummy - I bow to your collective wisdom. Many thanks. Any idea how to tell the 215/223 apart? Evidently the crank is shot so I suppose I'll have to pay someone to rebuild it and find out then if there's no easier way.

You have to measure the bore.

If the engine has been bored out, the pistons usually are marked on top as to the size: .020" / .030" etc.

No markings, pistons are standard bore.

B&S: 215: 3.56" x 3.60" / 223: 3.62" x 3.60"

And, btw...

Welcome to FTE

Ebp?

I have the same EBP on my block, I just posted this A.M. in an attempt to have someone tell me what it stood for. I should have searched longer till I found this thread but my dail-up makes me impatient sometimes!

My engine has the intake on the drivers side with the glass front Holley carb. The valve cover is attached with the 8 perimeter bolts. It also has the road draft tube. The casting number on the block is EBP-6015-L.

So, NumberDummy, you said EBP was strictly from the 50's, do you have anymore insight you can share with us? I know the history on this engine and am sure it came from a 60 F100, but this EBP thing is driving me nuts! I expected to find C0T, right ?!?

Am I just another victim of the whim of casting number comedians?

Thanks for your help!!!!!!

The block you have is 1954/59, the head is from a 1960/64.

You know the history of the engine since 1960?

Authorized Ford parts rebuilders, autoparts stores, all sold rebuilt engines, and would piece these together using a head from one year, a block from another.

Ford only used the three digit E casting code prefix in the 1950's.

In 1960, the casting number prefix went to four digits: C0TE is the casting number prefix for 1960/64 223's.

btw: The new vehicle warranty back in 1960 was only 90 days/4,000 miles. So how long has the current engine been in this truck?

Now who would dare put 4000 miles on an inline 6 truck? Out of curiousity, would there be a rebuild tag located somewhere? I have a newer rebuilt engine that had a tag riveted to the block. Anyway, it wouldn't surprise me if your engine was started on the assembly line when the 1960 heads were being unpackaged. I would look for the date codes such as 0A13 or something like that. On my rebuilt I have different years' heads and the date codes verified that it was rebuilt because of that.

GPD = Genuine Parts Distributors, Ford's Authorized rebuilder (aka Tumador Engine) that once covered the 11 Western Staes, HI and AK used to rivet a metal tag onto the engine.

Decals were used on most everything else.

btw: A pal of mine has been driving the same 1954 F100 223/stick & O/D every day for over 26 years..in LA traffic no less.

His truck is what we old pharts refer to as a practical pig. Restored mechanically, the outside looks original (ratty)...what you young 'uns call patina!

He just blew one FTE members mind, when he told him he drives it to Lake Havasu once a year during the summer.

My pal said to me after speaking with said FTE member..these new collectors are afraid to drive their trucks to the corner store!

Don't wanna mention any names, but the FTE member posts in this very forum.

No, it's not Col Flashman, who also knows my pal (who isn't an FTE member cuz he doesn't have a PC).

btw: if the F100 does break, my pal has several backup vehicles...the newest is a 1934 DeSoto Airflow, the oldest is a 1923 T.

Yeah, I just talked again after church to the guy I got the engine from. He said the dealer down the road,2 or 3 miles from his house, back in the day special ordered the truck in as a demo. When he finished with it, my friends dad bought it and used it untill it was parked behind his barn in the early seventies. My friend, who is in his mid fifties, is certain that the truck never had engine work.

Where do they put the number on the head? I don't have it off the block yet and the manifolds are still in place. The exhaust is EBP-8430-A and the intake is C0AE-9425-C. This truck also came with 3-speed overdrive that is in rough shape but I would like to restore it for my driver! I have a 51 ******- Overland station wagon with overdrive and that thing is a blast to drive. In the past I drove it for family vacation from central NY, 6 hours to south eastern Maine! Who needs minivans?!?!

I would guess looking under the valve cover will give you the head numbers.

A count of the valve cover bolts is one way, and a quick way is to look for a 2-3" long hose on the front of the block (by the water pump)....400's don't have one, 302's do.
