Hey guys, I am changing my truck ('89 F150, 300 Cyl) from a M5OD to an automatic. I know I need to remove the pilot bearing from the crankshaft, and have been told to find a shaft that will fit snugly into the pilot bearing and pack it with greas then tap it with a hammer. Is this the right way to remove it? Or do you guys have another trick?

Yes, that will work. Wet toilet paper stuffed in the hole works too, and doesn't make as much of a mess.

 

Thanks man! Now I got another question for ya after I see you are a trans guru. I have a '79 model C6 and a '90 model C6, I also have a '93 AOD from a cougar. I think I want to go with a C6, between all my choices. My question for you is: Is there a difference between a '79 C6 and a '90 C6? And if I do go with the AOD, is the bolt pattern of the flywheel the same as the C6? I already have a flywheel for the C6 is why I ask.


Also if I do go with the AOD, I know I'm supposed to use a trans PSI gauge to properly adjust the TV cable, can you explain how to do that?

I use a bearing puller unless the pilot bearing is junk, in that case I use an air chisel. You can rent a puller from Advance Auto.

 

--Pilot removal: On my '65 Mustang, I used a bolt just a little larger than the opening, and threaded it into the bronze. Once a couple threads are engaged, you can lever the bushing out. The grease/tp push out has been reported to work well here also.

--C6 vs. AOD: A '93 AOD is a good candidate, as many AOD issues had been fixed. Was this a V8? Even better. You are going to miss the OD with $5 gas...

Look around the TCI site for lots of AOD propaganda, parts etc, shifters, etc.

FWIW I'd keep the 5 gear, but then you can choose to shift for yourself on that decision....

 

Yes, there are many differences. I don't know all of them.

I don't know, but I do know Ford doesn't like to keep the same bolt pattern on different applications.
