E4OD won't shift into 3rd
This afternoon truck was running fine and I came to a stop. Started going again and it won't shift into 3rd gear whether I try to start off in Drive or I try to shift the E4OD manually. It just winds up in 2nd gear and then it won't do anything more until the rpms come back down and 2nd gear catches back up and it goes again. 1st, 2nd and reverse all work fine but it just won't shift into 3rd. Got home, checked fluid and the level was good with a good color and no burnt smell, no leaking of the tranny either. By the way it is a 96 PSD F-250 with 157k. Could be anything except a messed up E4OD?????
Thanks in Advance,
Brian

this sounds really obvious, but it is the 2-3 shift valve stuck in the 1-2 position. i have had 3 transmissions do this to me and that valve always gives trouble before any other ones. when the problem is still not too bad, it will do it only after the tranny warms up, then will do it more often. you will have to take the trans pan off and take the rear large valve body off and clean the valve. or take it to a transmission shop and tell them to clean the valve body and dont let them talk you into rebuilding the whole trans. i am 100% sure this is the problem

Mine turned out to be the solenoid pack on the transmission. This may be what you are talking about in the above statement. Everything was $250 OTD with the tranny shop doing it.
Thanks Again,

Thank you very much, I had code 622, had continuity, and changed the solenoid pack already without fixing the problem. My 2-3 shift valve (while very clean) was stuck in place. After dislodging and light cleaning, it shifted like a champ!
