I've got a pair of hinges that don't sit right on my truck. I have the springs off right now so my hood sits on the body properly, but when they're on the hood sits about two inches up on the back end. What the he** is causing that!? Its driving me nuts. Do I need new hinges or just hinge springs?

 

What vehicle is it? Year and model.

 

1964 F250, I had thought they might be too tight, but the hood isn't supported by the spring at all so i think there might be a problem with the hinges them selves. Now I have no Idea what might be wrong with them. Did these trucks have a hood prop maybe or am I missing something?

 

First the proper forum for this question is in the section that has your year truck listed in it, you will have many more people who work on that model equipment and you will get a much greater voice of experience in that forum. But I have had this trouble with a 64 I own, the trouble is not the springs its the hinges, you see the pin area is worn oblong and with the spring on it pull the hood into another position raising the hood at the rear. I had been trying there for sometime, but no answer untill I came here.

 

At some point the hood flew up...prolly not far enough to dent the roof, but far enough to stretch the slots that the pins fit in to.

This was fairly common back then, and occurs now, too.

What happens is ppl slam the heavy hood, over time the force of slamming the hood causes the latch to settle, so the hood now won't latch properly, and up it goes.

The proper way to close the hood: Bring it down slowly and let the safety catch take hold...then push down firmly at the center front.

Rule of thumb: After you think it has latched, try raising it without tripping the hood release.

 

No kidding, I saw a guy have that happen once. Helarious until he and I stopped and I saw what it did to his windshield/roof...

 

What's not funny is the price of new hinges. At the F100 SuperNats held in Knoxville last month, some obsolete parts seller had several pairs of new ones on his table.

I about scheiss a brick when I saw the price...believe it or not: $250.00 for the pair.

Think that's a horrible price? I just did a search on the Ford dealer parts locator system for new ones.

Found a few...the last list price from Ford? 835 DOLLARS...EACH!!

Junkyarding: The right/left hinges are the same 1961/66 F100/750 / 1967/69 F800/1000.

 

My hood came up twice. Not funny at the time but now I can sit back and laugh about it. I went to the junk yard and bought an old pair of hinges and the hood sat up in the back. I figured my hood was bent and causing the problem so I changed hoods. Now I realize that I have another set of bad hinges.

 

Junkyards seem to be around 100 for the pair (including shipping) but I was looking through Mac's and LMC, they're about 50 each, plus whatever shipping is. I guess I'll have to use reproduction and not original.

 

I have had the same issue on cars that I couldn't find new or even better than what I had.So here goes,first grind off the rivet holding the hinge together but mark the dead center of the hole and mark with a scribe.Then mig weld the inside of the hole till its completely closed file smooth the use a center punch and drill your hole,use a drill press if possible then install new rivet or bolt with a sleeve,if you do the bolt go up one size on the hole to allow for the sleeve. I hope you understand my ramblings and that this helps,I'm sure it's cheaper.

 

Thanks for the suggestion, and it may be cheaper, but I have no welding equipment and I don't know how to weld, I found a pair through LMC new (reproduction) for around $130.00 per pair with shipping, so I'm going to go that route. Thanks again for the tip. Maybe one day I'll be better at this and can do something like that, but for now, I'll have to settle for reproduction.

 

I bought some from the junkyard for $25 for the pair. Thats alot cheaper than $130.00.
