I got my truck back with a new trans so we went to Va. for the weekend and my mileage was worse than ever! 8/9 MPG on the way down. On the trip home it was better 14.7 MPG but not what I was getting. So today I removed the EGR valve and cleaned it. It was a mess. I put it back and everything was ok. I don't know if it will help with the mileage but at this point anything may help. I called the dealer and he told me there is nothing that they can do if there are no codes showing. I asked if it needed to be reprogrammed. He told me it will not help that is the best that I can get. I am not to impressed. I wish the trans never went bad.

 

Sam that sucks. But dont feel too bad the ambo only gets slightly better fuel economy then that. In fact the government doesnt even list the e 350.

 

I have to say the truck drove nice. I just don't understand why a trans change can effect the mileage like that. Nice to here from you Shaun.

 

The computer is relearning your driving habits so that might be your problem Sam. It is also good to hear from you as well Sam.

 

Sam what were you getting before the transmission change. I am getting about 16 mpg with my 03.

 

It was getting 17.5/18 mpg From Pa to Va. 250 miles one way. I took Rt 13 or Rt 113 . I never use Rt113 in the summer when shore traffic is heavy. Keep the rpm under 2000 when starting out at a light and stay at 58mph. Avoid stopping for coffee as much as I can.

Sam, remember there is a break in period for a trans just like your motor needed it when you first got it.

 

Hi Ryan I did not give that a thought. It has been getting better but it has a way to go. It shifts smooth and grabs off the line better than before . The temp gauge never changed but I do not trust them. The next trip will tell.

 

Sam i would get a set of gauges or some type of a way to monitor your truck. From an "A" pillar set up to a edge or maybe the TS performance heads up display You need something to watch that tranny, EGTs and well we all love to watch the boost go up and down.

 

All of the guages you listed are a waste on a stock truck....except for general knowledge purposes. The PCM will govern all those settings on the 6.0 and power down before they get too high.

I'm not too sure of the idea of the break-in period being involved with the mileage. Just speaking from experience,once the trans is replaced,usually there is a recalibration to go with it. Most likely if this happened,the learning strategy was erased and slowly the dummy-guage will read closer to the actual mileage.

I hope before you reinstalled the egr valve into the intake that you replaced the o-rings and gasket. Most times when removed the old ones get burrs or damage and will cause a leak,decreasing flow,back-pressure,etc,etc,etc The kit is only like ten bucks at the dealer.

 

See maybe I assumed too much and figured the shop/dealer would have done the recalibration so that is why I figured it might be a break in thing. Guages, well i guess it more of a personal thing. I like to see a needle point to a number or see it digitally. Just me though. I can gain a better knowlage of how my truck runs and opperates better then with a swing guage with green and red areas. Saved a couple fire trucks I drove because I noticed a pattern by watching the guages we had, they were numbered not general ok/bad type.

 

Not disagreeing with that Ryan. I for one would install guages in a diesel truck if I owned one. Most people that get them are doing it cause they look cool or just to say that they know what's going on with their truck. Most of those wouldn't understand what that boost or egt measurements are telling them about their motor,except that the boost is high/low and the egts are high/low. Edge(not to knock their products)enable owners to change fuel trim and all other sorts of stuff that if done improperly could do some serious damage. The other guys using SCT and other premade/preset programmers are driving their trucks with calibrations that the company sets up for them....not to the individual. Bad move in my opinion.
