It's good to see a section devoted to the 4-in-a-row. I have a 2.3L, so this area will be of interest to me.

 

Hey, i have a 2.3L in my ol'M-151a1 army jeep and i needed help but couldn't find info on the engine, then i found this forum but no one had anything here. So i started the first question and hoped it would get going. Well the forum started well and i hope it keeps going.

 

Hi Bob. I saw your engine question but just assumed it was an older flat-head. If it is indeed a 2.3L overhead cam Ford, then there is a ton of info and parts out there for it. The 2.3 was used in Mustangs and Rangers, and is very durable. Is it a 74 or later, and does it have an overhead cam? And does it say Ford inside an oval on the cam cover?

Wasn't it first used in the Pinto?

 

I'm not sure if its the same one used in pintos and rangers. its the inline 4 and it was made(the engine) between '65 and '81 in the kind of jeep i have untill they replaced it with the Humvee.

 

Funny thing is I used to drive those things all the time in the army. But for the life of me I can't remember what the engine looked like. I never liked the little beast I preferred the 3/4 with the old flat head six. Talk about your bulletproof drivetrains that thing never quit. Wasn't too fast but what the heck it never stopped either. The M-151 if I remember correctly was made by Ford but had the same problem as the early Corvair in that the rear axle would "jack up" if lightly loaded and you didn't watch your turns. They used to show some kind of film about it to people who were getting their military driver’s license. Otherwise it wasn't a bad little vehicle unfortunately land mines would ruin your whole day real fast. I’m glad they replaced it with something a little more substantial.
