I have a 2.3L in a 92 Mustang. Lately it's been dripping a little oil on the garage floor. I changed the oil last weekend, and narrowed the possible leak sources down to either the valve cover gasket, or a rear main seal. (I'm hoping for the valve cover gasket) My question is: how many miles should a rear main seal last? The engine has about 117K miles on it.

 

The rear main should last a LONG time. The cam cover probably will leak 2 to 3 times before the rear main. Also, you should check the block/head sealing as I had oil coming down the side of the block from where the head rested on the block. I retorqued the head bolts with the engine cold, and the oil leak stopped...

Thanks, Tom. That's what I wanted to hear. I will try re-torqueing the cam cover bolts this weekend, and change it out when the weather warms up.

 

are you sure it's leaking oil and not tranny or p/s fluid? could be a bad pitman seal
