Hi folks...I'm new to the forum and need help. The subject truck had a "new motor" swapped in prior to purchase. the emissions system is a mess and it's running very rich with poor idle and stalling. I'm not looking for performace just reliability and ease of repair. I need to know how to swap in an earlier carb with out all the vacuum bells and whistles. will I need a new manifold? which carb should I use (pinto, 2V autolite or holley, 1V autolite or similar?). the truck has a duraspark ignition,(single spark plug per cyl.) will it need to be modified? how do I delete the smog pump (save what and HP)?

 

go with a autolight 2100 (motorcraft 2100D are easy to find) they are very nice and good on the gas but not realy on proformance if you want to go nuts then grab the holley 2v 500cfm carb and a book you'll need it. the 2100 or 2100D is a easy to rebuild as using a thouchtone phone. i've rebuilt so many i can't remember

 

I have an 84 ranger that was having the same problems you are having. I put a one barrel carb off an early seventies ford on mine. They are a direct bolt on and mine runs a whole lot better. As for the smogpump I just took the belt off and havent had any problems so far. I took the belt off three years ago. I also took all of the vaccum lines except for the vac. adv. and the brake booster, since none of that emissions stuff worked anyway. Good luck, hope this helps!

 

 

I know this is an old thread, but does any one know if this does work?

I have and 83 Ranger 2.3 and would not mind paying $20 to $30 and then rebuilding it than $30+ just for the rebuild kit for the carb that's on it. I also need the auto choke that cost another $50. I have even seen the autolight 2100 for as little as $10 with the choke and all.

If it does work would I need to replace the jets? The autolight 2100 was designed for the bigger motor and I would think it would need smaller jets.

 

No, there's no need to replace the jets, and I wouldn't unless you really know what you're doing so far as engine tuning is concerned.

By the auto choke, I suppose you're talking about the choke cap??? I had to replace one once myself on an '81 Mustang 2.3L (2V carb) and I don't recall paying anywhere near $50 for it.
