MERC. FLATHEAD
I'm going to guess on some answers for you, based on what I learned on my boat. It is a 1978 Lund with a 302 V-8 The basic engine at that time was a car eng, with marine attachments. The starter, Alt, Carb are all desighned to resist rust and corroseion, and to not make fuel fumes and sparks. The Distubetor is different, but the internal eng is the same. Now I am guessing that an older eng would have LESS different parts than mine, But it gives you something to start with. Now if it is a true Merc eng, that opens up the possability of really hot-roding. Any Questions e-mail me..

There is a little differnces from ford and mercury engines. The merc was a little thicker in the block around the valve seat and the cyl and they didn't crack the block as bad when you got them hot. and they had 10 more horsepower than ford. They used diff.cam shaft and head. and marine had 10 to 15 more hp than car engines. In the late 60, I had woods boat with a 51 merc engines. YOU CAN PUT IT IN WITH NO PROBLEMS.

I got both Ford and Merc engines and I only can see a difference in the crank and was told by a reputable machine shop that if the block of the Merc is cracked to save the crank as it is a 1/4 of an inch longer throw and believe me they still crack in all the same places ( 1/4 inche throw accounts for the 10 hp increase and a cam and head change would increase it even more ). I just put a set of Edelbrock heads on one and increased the horses up 25 % ( compression ratio went from 6 1/2to 1 to a whopping 8 to 1 ) .
So as far as using this in your truck it will work and if it is fresher then you will notice a big change but if it isn't then it will be the same . Just remember that the Ford is a work truck and the Merc is just the same but dressed up .

If it has a 4" stroke its a 255cid most Mercs cars and trucks meteors and monarchs used this engine.
