Throw out bearing

Hello ya'll I have a question.... I have a 1995 Ford F350 with a 460 big block. The throw out bearing has been going out the past year or so. I've owned it a little over a year. Well, it started making wierd noises when I drove it like my brother said and do HIGH RPM's before I shift. Life shift at 4k when I'm in first, shift at 5 to 6 from 2nd and up. It did a toll on my poor truck. I shift in low rpms it right now is getting 12.5 MPG which I've been told is VERY good for a 460.
My question is this... I took my ford in to get looked at the guy estimated it to be an 8 hour work because ford's with big blocks leak? I dunno, he said that I'd need new like screws because if it'll leak the case thingy he has to open he'll have to pry the screws off and break them and so on and so fourth. He said it'd be about 800 dollars for the throw out bearing, he says my clutch is sounding like it's going out as well that'll be another 800 bucks.
I don't want to get taken to the cleaners, I know i cant do the ingine alone (And I"m very sorry for my spelling) but... I just need some advice.
I want to compete in barrels here pretty soon, and if my truck is fixed or not I'm still driving it...
what can I do to fix it?
How hard is it to fix a F350 with a 460 big block? Fix the throw out bearing and the clutch?
How much would it be?
what tools would I need?
Thank you so very much for everything.

Thank you. I know I guess my brother said to shift at 3 or 4.
I shift at one in a half to two.
I am so used to a dodge diesel 2500.

You should be able to shift your 460 at 2500 rpm or so and be just fine. 4000 if you're in a big hurry. Don't go past 4500.

Is this a 4 wheel drive truck?

A throwout bearing requires removal of the transmission. If 4WD, sometimes the transfer case must be moved or removed as well.

This is not terribly difficult in a shop with proper tools, overhead lifts, transmission jacks etc, but it does take time. (at up to $90 per hour or more shop time charge)

Doing this job on the driveway could prove fatal to an inexperienced first timer.

As for the clutch, whenever a transmission is removed from a vehicle, unless the clutch is known to be fairly new, you replace the clutch and pressure plate and resurface the flywheel if needed. These parts, while not free, are fairly inexpensive compared to the labor of transmission r & r.

You may wish to get a couple of quotes and be sure to check the shop out--BBB, friends who have been there, etc. You do not want a shop that says "Well, we've never done a 460 in an F350, but we can do it. I think."

Good luck and post any results, quotes, questions, and our team of experts and internet addicts will provide addition suggestions and information.

thank u

It is a 4wd truck.
it's my puller.

Yea, I went to a shop he said it was the throwout bearing and might needs to change the clutch.

Yea, My father says "it's very simple" haha, He could do it.
I know a guy who'd do it for ten an hour if we bought the suplys but it dosen't feel right to me.
I need my ford to proform and work at it's best.

I tow a three horse bumper pull slant load with the truck. It trailers like a dream, but it's having troubles now.

last year it's made a strange noise, that is getting worse.

It jumps into gears at times. Pops out of gears, So I'm guessin clutch needs to be fixed.

I love my truck but it's a bich to fix. lol
I guess I should take auto classes

Popping in and out of gear is a transmission issue. Possible the pilot bushing being worn out would cause, but if it's that sloppy, there is more damage inside the box. Pilot always gets replaced with clutch.

This is just getting worse....

Yep was just getting ready to mention that 85e. It does sound like theres more than just your clutch/throwout thats having issues if your jumping into and out of gears. A bad pilot/throwout will make it hard to put into gear, but shouldn't cause the tranny to pop out of gear.

As for the clutch kit you can go to a NAPA auto parts store and order one for it along w/a new flywheel and all together should run around $600.00-$675.00, that is where I got mine when I had my f-350 7.3 turbo diesel, and it is still in the truck to this very day. And as for it jumping in and out of gears sounds like an internal problem as E85 said above^^. When the transmission is taken out it wouldn't be a bad idea to go ahead and take the fly wheel off and replace the carrier bearing, doing this now will save the hastle of doing it later on when it does go out. As for getting a shop to repair it I would shop around and find a shop that has repeat customers and or that is highly talked about in the service area as in doing good jobs on repairs, don't just go w/the first place u run across. Good Luck and keep us updated as to how things are going.
