Gear Shift locked

When trying to put my 200 F-150 truck in gear, my gear shift is locked. I have to pump my breaks a few times to get it to go in gear. Any idea what the problem may be?

I'd have to see it....Try to bypass the interlock switch, or maybe you have a vacuum leak, or maybe Ford has gotten creative to the point of locking out the truck when your brakes wear to a certain point and the fluid gets low.

You're kidding...

Brake light switch or the wiring to it is staring to get intermittent.

Your owner's manual has the procedure for emergency bypassing of the shift interlock.

My sister's Lexus won't come out of Park if her brake fluid's low, as in, if she ignores her brakes, when the fluid gets down to a caertain level, it don't move no more. It's a safety thing. It has a bunch of criteria that will either keep it from starting, or going into gear.

Hey... I thought this was the F-150 Forum! Makes me glad I don't own a Lexus. You may want to verify your info to make sure it applies to Ford products before you post it...

Here's how to bypass the interlock. This is from the owners manual.

Brake-shift interlock - column-shift transmission

This vehicle is equipped with a park/brake-shift interlock feature that
prevents the gearshift lever from being moved from P (Park) when the
ignition is in the ON position unless the brake pedal is depressed.
If you cannot move the gearshift lever out of P (Park) with ignition in
the ON position and the brake pedal depressed, it is possible that a fuse
has blown or the vehicle’s brakelamps are not operating properly. Refer
to Fuses and relays in the Roadside Emergencies chapter.
If the fuse is not blown, perform the following procedure:

1. Apply the parking brake, turn the ignition to OFF/LOCK, then remove
the key.
2. Locate the round access plug on the underside of the steering column cover.


3. Remove the access plug using a flat head screwdriver, then push the
override button using a flat head screwdriver, apply the brake pedal and
shift the transmission into N (Neutral).


4. Reinstall the access plug cover, start the vehicle and release the
parking brake.

Brake-shift interlock - floor-shift transmission

This vehicle is equipped with a brake-shift interlock feature that prevents
the gearshift lever from being moved from P (Park) when the ignition is
in the ON position unless the brake pedal is depressed.

housing assembly (as shown in the illustration). Press the gearshift lever release on the shifter **** and move the gearshift lever back to N (Neutral) (two places rearward from P [Park]).

5. Start the vehicle and release the parking brake.

Actually, you may want to read and COMPREHEND what I wrote before attempting to rebut me. I advised the guy of the option to bypass the interlock switch, and said that perhaps Ford had gotten creative to the point of the brake fluid working in conjunction with the interlock. At no time did I say that was the problem. Can you troubleshoot his problem via a keyboard and monitor? NO! Anybody, including me (which I did) can tell someone to bypass their interlock, but WHY is his interlock locking him out in the first place? He already said his brakes are shot. I mentioned the Lexus as an EXAMPLE, just like many on here mention Toyota, Dodge, and Chevrolet, including cars. Don't like it? Don't read my posts.
