Hello All,

I know this has been asked a few times but I'm just trying to see if any new members (or old) has actually converted an 2WD F100 (ideally '73-'79) to power steering (or knows someone who has and would be willing to offer some advice). I've heard a few stories about using Nissan boxes and conversions for 4WDs but there seems to be little definitive information about what is required to do the 2WD swap.

I can get hold of a kit in NSW which has all the parts required but I'm looking at AU$2500 and then I've got to fit the thing on top of that, I was thinking I could just go and buy an old Fairlane for that much money and use the parts from that (with a few modifications I presume )?

Try Campbelltown F100 Truck Wreckers, 46 281780. He's a pretty helpful guy who owns the place. He's has a array of parts for F100's of your era. Certainly he can give you some advice on which way to go.

Thanks for the reply Aussie 53, The guy at Campbelltown Truck Wreckers is who I can get the kit from. I guess if that's the only way to go then it's a toss up between manual steering and dropping $2500 (that's plenty of )

It can be done but costs lots of drinking money, the pump set up as you thought can come from just about any similar engine (for brackets etc, custom lines will need to be made, the Box is out of a Nissan 260C (the long nose one not the short one) original column shortened a little Crush tubes for the box mounting and you are almost there, and of course to keep it legal cause you have modified steering you will need an engineers report and certification.

All of that said I would not go back to not having P/steer now LOL it is fantastic!

About 12 years ago I did a right hand conversion on a 76 F250 crew cab and used a 260 or 280 C Nissan sedan power steering box. I used a XE steering column and there was at the time a auto electrical shop in the west end in Brisbane (I cant remember the name)that used to sell pitman arms to suit F series with the nissan spline. It worked fine the only improvement would be the pitman arm could have been a bit longer as it didn't allow the steering to quite reach the steering stops. I made steering hoses to let me use the pump that was on the 460. I fabricated all the mounts etc and at the time I think parts only cost me about $ 450 in total (oh for the good old days)

I'd have thought there would be newer RHD F150's with P/S boxes that would bolt right in place. Surely there are some in salvage yards - it might be worth a look just to see if they're at all similar.

My old F100 in the states had parts from all sorts of models and years in it!

 

Hey Toothman, Great Question! I know this thread is from years ago, I just wondered what you ended up doing.... I am after exactly the same thing and am also wondering if we could use an old Fairlane/Falcon steering box -or one from an earlier bronco even. I have also heard the same stories about a Nissan box working.... Someone please HELP ! Any NEWER suggestions since 2008/9 would be greatly appreciated. My trucks steering is SO heavy !

 

Anyone found anything? just started a full rebuild on a 81 F350... anyway, was told a mazda titan or mitsubishi canter box fits up... will confirm that very soon (with pictures), will be looking for one this week.
