Louisiana Junkyards?

Does anyone else love going to old fashioned junkyards as much as I do? I went to the new self pull yard in Lafayette this morning and was pretty disappionted. No one allowed under 16, can't drive your truck anywhere near where the vehicles are, and only wheel barrows for moving tools and parts around. And my three heavy tool boxes were so thouroghly searched before and after, it was pretty annoying. I guess my main question is are there any junkyards left in LA that have a real guy that answers the phone and some old Ford trucks that you and your kids and drive up to the vehicle and pull what you need and pay for it and get in and out without feeling like a terror suspect?

Thanks, that's about 2 hour drive from my house. I used to live in CT where everything was an hour away. Wanna go to the beach? hour drive. It's winter wanna go skiing? hour drive. Wanna go to Boston? How bout NYC? Either one-hour drive. Louisiana is big. I remember they had this bridge on 95 and you could see the two biggest yachts you'll ever see and one was that politician Chris Dodd, the one that ran for the democratic nomination earlier this year and the other belonged to a guy who owns some big auto salvage yard/dismantler place can't remember the name of the it. It's the type of place you go and the part is in a warehouse all cleaned up and inspected and ready to deliver and is almost as expensive as the dealer. I've been in Louisiana for over 10 years and haven't been junkyard exploring until the last couple months when I picked up the '70 and now even more so with the Ranger.
I miss the days of dad and a buddy spending all day pulling parts off cars while me and my brother would sit in couple of old cars pretending we were racing the indy 500 or baja 1000 or digging through glove boxes and trunks, or just wandering around looking for something shiny

I would rather be in a junkyard than go to a car show.

A lot of nice cars in a car show, but you can't touch them.

I go to a junkyard in Mamou, La and he has dozens of 70s model trucks.
I brought the g/f there a couple times. I talk to the owner while pulling parts and we bring each other beer(me one time, him the next), he also has a mud pit going through parts of his yard. I have a lot of fun over there...only bad thing is the chicken trees make a good place for wasps, but lucky that's only about 1/4 of the yard and not the whole thing. I usually get parts for either dirt cheap or free.

There used to be another good yard, but all the trucks got crushed...

The one that crushed them all is Tony Gahn's, but the one I go to doesn't have a name (not that I'm aware of).
That's not their primary business. They own the shop (a little run down, junkyard looking place) next to the piggly wiggly, have a towing service, and the junkyard is about 4-5 miles from their shop, and they only go there if you call them or go talk to them.
Everyone that know's about it calls it Thrisha's (sp?), I guess the guy gave it to his daughter, but ever time I go it's always him that meets me there (his name is Clayton). I have their shop number, his house number, and his cell #.

Hey Matt, I'm in Opelousas, Mamou is only about 30-40 minutes from my house. I'll have to go out there and meet those guys soon. I'd rather be in a junkyard than a car show too but are you going to go to the car show this weekend in Opelousas? April 19 – "It's Not Your Daddy's Car Show" presented by Planet Radio. Opelousas. Evangeline Downs Racetrack & Casino, 2235 Creswell Lane Ext. Some of the most amazing cars in the State will compete in categories such as Best of Show, Best Display, and Best Paint Job. Free Admission. 10 AM-3 PM. (337) 594-3000 or evangelinedowns.com. I def don't have anything to show, but me and my sons are going to just hang out. If I'm not offshore. Vessel may or may not be ready, it's in drydock in TX.
