Little diesels

Is anyone currently putting out a small 1/2 tonne p.u. with a 3 or 4 banger diesel?

I miss my little Ram50 with a Mitzi NA diesel ... It blew such nice black smoke for a little truck ... Too bad that high school cheerleader broadsided it with her new Passat ...

If I remember correctly those were the only turbo diesel small trucks out there.

Ford is rumored to have an oil-burner ready for the 2010 F150. Ditto for GM's half-ton.

These are all projects that started before diesel fuel prices shot through the roof.... they may be shelved to prevent throwing good money after bad.... all depends on the sales predictions, and right now, they aren't good.

These projects should have been done before diesel shot through the roof. Like for the 04 MY in the F150. They have missed the boat for sure on this one.

It probably was not possible to meet the more stringent emission requirements the F150 is saddled with and have a satisfactory performing engine without ULSD fuel.

The 09 Ram will have a 5 liter V8 diesel, actually, I think a little bit over 5 liters, but smaller then 6.

Most 3 and 4 cylinder diesels are really not enough for 1/2 ton pickups. The only 4 cyl I can think of that would okay in a 1/2 ton would be the 3.9L Cummins 4BT

Apperently the automakers all believe these days that if it's a diesel it has to go into a full size vehicle.
They are missing a HUGE market opportunity here by not offering a compact 4 cylinder in the 2 liter range in a compact truck like they used to in the early 1980s.

Too bad this Ford is half way across the world ...

I think this with a turbo 4-banger diesel would be just the ticket ...
