As the title states, I am looking for 2 wheel hubs for the Dana 44 HD axle. I am amazed at how hard of a part this is to find!!! Can anyone point me in the right direction???

 

If I cant find one from a '76, could I convert to a '77 1/2-'79 hub? Do they share the same size spindle/bearings? I know the locking hub is different. What would the swap take?

However the original Spicer Hubs are stronger. Best bet is junk yard search. I've seen them go for $100 and up.

Why is it hard to find? Because in most cases, Ford only supplied the hub and rotor as an assembly.

Thanks for the link. I emailed him because the website will not search for anything pre '80. I think I will be able to use a '77 1/2 to '79 hub. They do share the same bearings. broncograveyard.com has them for $70 each. Not a bad price considering Napa sells them for $154... LOL...

 

76 & 77 are a different hub from a 78 & 79 F250. Also the 78 & 79 are a shorter axle shaft...
I've never seen the swap done...

 

I dont think the length of the axle shaft will have much to do with the size of the hub. I think that would be more in the axle tube length. The hubs share the same sized bearings. I will have to hold them side by side to see. If there is anyone out there with a hub from a 77 1/2 to 79 lying around, take a measure from race to race (bearing cup to bearing cup) and post it. I will do the same to see if there is any difference there. It has to be from the HD axle...
I have seen the '77 1/2 to '79 spindles and they look identical to the ones off the '76. You never know, I might find a new conversion from this. Replacements are much easier, and cheaper, to come by for the '77 1/2 to '79. Replacement lock out hubs are cheaper as well...

Actually it does... and it's only the outer axle stub that changes length.

76-77 part # 29508-1 & 29508-2 = 34.75" & 18.62" with outer at 10.66"
78-79 part # 660124-3 & 660124-4 = 34.75" & 18.62" with outer at 9.72"

Now take a look at the two hubs, see how the 76-77 is much thicker at the end and has a different hub? The 78-79 is much smaller.
The axle shaft from a 76-77 will not let a 78-79 hub fit the lock-out on.

I can't remember if the spindles are the same or not....

I see what you are saying and thanks for the heads up about stub axle length difference. Yes, the '76-'77 lock out will not fit in place of the '78-'79 lock out because they are completely different. The two hubs share the same bearings and seal. The only thing that would keep me from using the later hub would be the actual distance between the inner and outer bearing cups. Is the track on a '78-'79 shorter than the '76-'78? It appears to be with a .94" difference in stub length. I guess I will just have to try it out if I cant find a replacement set for the '76.
