"Light Duty" F250 Rear axle seal replacement

Hello everyone, I am new to this forum and have a question about my daughter's truck. It's a 1982 F250 with the 4.9L 6 and a semi-floating rear axle. We need to replace the axle seals as they are leaking a bit and the brake shoes have some gear oil on them. I am having a problem figuring out how the axles come out of the axle tubes. We have removed all of the parts from the backing plates and even removed the wheel cylinder as they will be replaced as well. But I can't see how the hub/axle/bearing assembly comes out. It seems to have a cup over the seal and I assume the outer bearing. Does the axle have to be released from inside the differential or am I missing something? This is unlike any other semi-floating axle I have ever seen before-not that I have a huge amount of experience, but I have changed a few seals before. And just to be sure, this is not the full-floating axle, it is in fact the eight bolt hub with semi-floaters. Thanks for your help.

If you have 4 bolts that hold a cover plate on in the center of the backing plate, those usually hold the axle in place. After you take the 4 bolts out, you have to get a slide hammer and pull the axle out.

If you don't have a 4 bolt retainer, you may indeed have an axle that has c clips on the inner part of the axle, and you have to take the cover plate off the rearend to get these out.

If you do not have a slide hammer, a quick and dirty way to get the axle out is put the brake drum back on the studs backwards. Put 3 lugs nuts on till they are even with the tip of the studs, and then grab the drum and slam it back against the lug nuts. This is a poor man's axle puller, and will work unless the axle is really stuck.

P.S. Here's a link with some info, if you know what type rearend you have.
