I am wondering if anyone here knows approx how much it would cost to have the rear end of my '05 f-150 rebuilt or replaced. I just bought it and it is howling very loudly - I know it needs to be done asap. I am also thinking of looking into a pick and pull and swapping one out.
Also how hard/easy would it be to upgrade from the 8.8/3.55 to the 9.75/3.55?

I just had the clutch packs replaced in mine and it cost 980$ at the Ford dealer. My extended warranty paid for it. Dont know if clutch pack would cause a howling though, maybe gears. Anyway I dont see a gear swap being any cheaper. Of course if you go anywhere but the Ford dealer, im sure you can save some money. Good luck !

 

if you just bought it you should approach the dealer that you bought it from for some assistance. even if there is no warranty usually you can get some help especially if you talk nice to them.

Clutch packs are for the shudder issues. To swap from a 8.8 to 9.75, you'll have to get a new rear end. The change is fairly easy and maybe cheaper than rebuilding your current pig. Maybe find an axle at a junk yard. When you have it installed, drop the cover, check the pattern and put fresh lube in it. If the axle is just whining from the gears, not really a durability issue, more just a huge annoyance.

 

A friend of mine rebuilt a wreck a couple of years ago and paid $700-$750 for a 9.75 LS differential complete from a low mileage wreck.

 

So right now I have the 8.8/3.55 and have decided that swaping out the old for a 9.75 with 3.23 is my best option. I found one online for $1000 and I will just do the labor myself. My question is - does the e-brake hookup the same way from the old to the new? Also are all of the sensors the same (ABS, etc.)? Thanks

 

i got a price quote for $1700 to fix the 8.8 . i knew it was broke but the truck was cheap.it is cheaper to by the 9.75 if it will bult right in. i do know i will have to shorten the drive shaft thank for the help

 

Search the TSB, There is one that addresses the howl and is covered under warranty, just had mine replaced under warranty for this issue.

They supply all new gears and bearings and switch the lube to 70/140...

 

the truck has 150000 ford will not help me it the hole rear end. the ring and p and both axels are pist .looking for a cheap fix. thanks for any help you can give.

dont forget about the anti lock sensors and e brake hookups between the different rear ends-they may not be compatible. i would think a used 8.8 with 3.73 would be the way to go. far easier to change and not much more $$$ than trying to adapt a diffferent style.

i bought the one from new take offs . cost 1061.00 ship and tax.ca sucks.

 

So I got the rear end, pulled everything apart and put back together with only a few minor hiccups. The drive shaft's ujoints were non removable; so the drive line shop locally said to build a new one would be 600 bucks, so I found a local wrecking yard with one and did that for 1$50 instead from a wrecked truck w/ 9.75 rear. Gone 6,000 miles so far and need to balance the drive shaft, but other than that it was a very easy installation and good deal.

 

good to hear...people always think I'm crazy when I get stuff from a junkyard. but I believe there is nothing wrong with re-using parts...especially if it's cheaper.

did you swap to a 9.75, or just keep the 8.8?

if you upgraded, what all did you need to switch? or was it just a simple unbolt and rebolt new one?
