A thing about Australian roads that must have figured in the design scheme is that it is a "LONG WAY TO ANYWHERE".
And not all the roads in the outback are camel trails...
Like the interstates in America, they have well maintained blacktop that is near endless, and practically nothing to see along the way - so why not go FAST?
It's the ultimate "OTTOBAHN". Worry more about kangaroos than cops...
The more I think about it, the more I like it. We've seen an influx of Aussies coming over here - someone ought to replace them.

Bring back the original pre-bloat mini-pickups; cheap and simple--I think they were cheaper to operate than almost any other vehicle. I can deal with rubber mats, am able to roll up windows (used to do it years ago in everything I owned), and don't mind a little mechanical noise. Even though they were small, they were real TRUCKS, and I like trucks.

no,no,no we dont have well maintained blacktop,its maintained but i wouldnt say well,some of our multi lane roads are good and some are well not so good.The main road into australias biggest city[sydney]is a two lane goat track,you come of our f3 highway which goes 2lanes either way to 3 then back to 2 then 3 then2 then3 and in amongst all this it goes 100k,s an hour to 110 then 90 then 110 then 100 then at the moment 80 for road works,then you come to the sydney outskirts main road[LOOK OUT WATCH THOSE BIG HOLES IN THE ROAD]so i,ll get of my soapbox now just to say bang, lucky i drive a truck some cars would disappear on our roads in the holes.

I might go in and correct them...
50% of Australias roads aren't even sealed... and red58 is right... our roads (in particular ones in NSW) are appaling.
Even in the NT, where they are now introducing speed limits
will have pot holes that you can loose a small truck in... Try hitting one of them pushing 200mph. Not to mention they are single lane, traversed by the largest and heaviest highway trucks in the world...

nah a hovercraft would be no good it would throw up all the blue metal gravel they just laid,although i suppose its no differant to them doing what they do now,just leave it there put up a sign its there and let all the cars and trucks throw it up all over the place until theres roughly 2 or more lanes cleared and then come and sweep the rest up.Dont worry about new paint jobs,small dents or smashed windscreens we are road engineers we know what were doin.And like fred said new south must have some of the worst.
