I have a 72 f100 with a 390 and i want to put a breakerless ignition in it. What is the best fit and where do I find it. Thanks

 

Just go to the junkyard and get all the stuff off of a 70's truck

 

I used Accel's 'Points Eliminator' on my truck and it worked great. You can find em on Summit for not too much.

 

i have a performance distributors dui on mine. with wires it cost me freakin 500 dollars!
the difference is definitely there, but its not "holy smokes/ night and day difference"
its a nifty thing to have and i do like it, but if i could turn back time da da da da, i would not have bought it.

 

Pertronics, jegs or summit, $69.00, easy as pie install, and I use mine in a pulling truck, it has never missed a beat. I love it.

 

ford dura sprk from a 1976 360 and a wiring harness with a brain box is less then 50 bucks at the salvage yard. even if ya have to buy a new dist there only 50 buck too

 

I put a Pertronics in my 72 F250 360 when they came out years ago. It is still in there and all I do is change the cap and rotor about every 2 years. I now use them in all my pre-eletronic ignition Fords. I also get the coil they reccomend and paint the top yellow so it looks close to the original coil. I think getting the matching coil makes it work even better. Just my .02 worth.

 

I would make sure to get a system that allows you to use a modern high power 12v coil without a resistor wire or ballast. This way you get big spark all the time!

My boss put a mallory points-less distributor in his 351c, and the instructions said to keep the resistor wire or the warranty would be void! What?!? Isn't the whole point to be able to use a high power coil without frying the points? I understand its lower maintenance, but seems a bit dumb to me.

 

I've been using Pertronix and never had a problem but I think I'll try the Crane XR-i next...

 

A great conversion is to use the Duraspark from a 1975-up Ford vehicle along with a late-model TFI coil. I did the conversion on my '68 as well as Fastmover's '70.

It's possible to convert a points distributor to Duraspark but since it was available on FE engines anyway, it's easiest just to get the Duraspark FE distributor. If you want to go this way, I can supply you with a wiring diagram and more info.

 

I did the Pertronix and it is easy as pie. I'd have done a duraspart from a newer truck but for a few bucks more you don't have to dig in the salvage yard. It is much better than dealing with points every now and then.

 

I used a Crane Cams XR-1 in my '69 F700 361ci Firetruck...I'm no mechanic but install was easier than fixing a software problem on my computer. Runs sweet! $65 at Summit.

 

I like the Duraspark dist. with an aftermarket 12volt coil and a GM HEI module
Cheap easy and a HOT spark.

 

I have the Crane XR-1 in my 390 as well. Runs like a top!

 

After changing points many times, I installed a Pertronix sys in my '72 390. That was over 10 yrs ago, and the only thing I have done since is 1 cap and rotor. Best $69 I ever spent.
