2004 f150 fx4 Engine Replacement

Hi all,

I am being told that I need 6,270.00 in work on my truck.

Questions are this:

Is this excessive for cam head work etc

How much for a new engine to be put in

If I go with a new engine can the 04 fit other model year engines and if so is there one better to go with or does it matter?

Has anyone had this happen to them?

What would you do?

Thanks,

Tom

Question

Tom,

I have exact same truck and engine with almost 40,000. It has always been somewhat loud but most people seem to agree it is a loud engine. What was it that finally made your dealer/shop determine you needed a new engine? Thanks.

I have seen new 3 valve 5.4 complete for between 3-4K new. Was an online ad for a company in Canada.

And I was chatting with a fellow that had cam phaser trouble, he had extended warranty which was a good thing cause the bill was over 3k. Apparently if you don't catch it early enough the phaser will destroy the end of the cam.

i wasnt told to replace the engine it just made sense to look that direction if repairs are to cost me 6270.00 I just got the quote from the dealer on a replacement reman engine and it would be 6966 out the door. Labor for new engine is said to be 2507 for the work on the old engine 3141. Reman engine cost is 4118.16. UGH!

The only good part is I will get a 3 year 75,000 mile warranty on this engine however I am sure in the installation process something adjacent to the engine will go wrong and would not be covered. They will get me one way or another I am afraid.

If you are having that done at the dealer, then most of that 6200 dollars is labor charges.

If possible check out other dealers or certified repair shops.

Even with getting a new engine you will still have to pay for the labor of changing it out.
How many miles on the engine?

Help!

Benn or anyone,

If 4100.00 is high what should I be looking for? Also I looked online a bit and saw that some places have rebuilt 5.4's but how do I know they have all the updated bells and whistles from all the Service Bulletins? Ford is telling me their engine will come all updated but I don't know if I can trust that and I have no way to prove that.

Also Ford is telling me that if the truck had this problem at under 75,000 they could have helped even with the warranty at 3 year or 36,000. I have 76,000 and they told me to get in touch with area representative and see if they can help with the repair at all.

Another concern is this the reman engine is 3 years or 75,000 miles. However the ones I see online are being sold as 3 years or 100,000 miles. Why does ford not stand behind their "factory reconditioned engine" as opposed to online sellers? Who do I trust?

If you were in my shoes what would be your course of action?

I thank everyone for all their help with this!!

Tom

i think that you need to look hard at whether you think that more is going to go wrong in the first 75,000 miles of warranty for the dealer engine or in the 25,000 mile of not being covered as opposed to the online engine personally i dont think that an area rep will help you much but you can hope. as fas as being in your shoes i would choose the engine online due to the 25,000 mile of extra coverage as incase crap happens after 75,000 mile but i would install my own engine. i think you should go with the internet engine if its seller has a good reputation for standing by the warranty and for delivery so your not ripped off. the more covererage under warranty is the deciding factor for me

TomR1972,

I had to do a new engine in my 04 Lariat last fall (dropped a valve into the engine when it was running). Ford wanted $7,500 for a replacement engine (not sure if that was a long block or short block) and another $2,800 to $3,500 in labour to pull the old one and install the new one.

I found a used engine out of a 05 that was T-boned with 15,000 km on it in Ontario, had it shipped out to me in Alberta and installed it myself. Total cost for the work - $3,500 including headers, Banks exhast, new plugs, new belts and AC recharge. Could have taken around $1,300 off this price if you delete the headers and exhaust, but while I had the engine out, there was no better time to do this work.

I now have 45,000km on the replacement and it is running great. Just be warned that it is not a job for the faint of heart. Get a Factory Shop Manual (not some cheap thing at the local book store), take your time and everything will work out.

Thanks

I have no ability in changing out the engine myself. Just want to know what my options are from the seasoned vets around here!!!

Out the door with a new reman engine for 6900.00 but I am working on getting this down. Do you think that the price is reasonable if I am not putting it in myself? I am hoping to get that number down to at least 6000.00 and have them add the extra 25,000 mile warranty.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Tom

4100 Is Straight List I Would Just Try To See If You Could Work It Down A Few Dollars. The 3yr 75,000 Warr. Is good If Done At Any Shop.

I See All The Time Jasper And Other Reman Engines Going Bad. I Have Worked Here For Five Years And I Have Never Seen A Forn Engine Go Bad In The Warr Period. The Ford Warr Is Good At Any Ford Dealer Across The County. Others Are Olny Good At Autherized Installers. Besides For Most People You Are Only Looking At The 3yr Period Not The Milage.

new twist

Ok so I talked to another dealership and they said they'd put in a ford reman engine for 5100.00 out the door. Is that too good to be true, or is it more in line? I will owe the current dealer x amount for the supposed work they done and then I'll have to tow it over but It will still be roughly 1300 cheaper doing it this way.

Thoughts?
