Well, I busted open the 4-speed tranny on the '51 today. Didn't look too awful bad, typical tooth wear, but nothing broke or chipped, everything slides smoothly (once I got the top shift out of reverse!). My question is, are any parts/gaskets available for these Oscars? If so, where? Don't seem to see any in the repop catalogs.

going to do the ring gear, too - the motor had a car clutch/bell housing, with a good ring gear, but the truck flywheel must have more miles. Nothing broken on it, but, quite a bit of wear, compared to the other - at $30, cheap, since I have it apart.

For good news, though, did get the tranny-mount barking prake cleaned up, and ready for new lining, when it gets here.

It's coming along, slowly, but s.s.s...well, slowly!

good question roger as i'm getting ready to pop open that t-98 . haven't looked at the catalogs yet . probably be smarter to find everything first . sure wouldnt want my cuz to get it apart then no parts to finish it !!!!

There a person on uPay that sells 4 speed transmission rebuild kits. I am pretty sure they're for the truck 4 speed. They allows pop up when I do a search using 1948-1952 and Ford.

I have the parts CD, and the shop manual...shouldn't have any problem, but if I can't get the parts, no sense in pulling it apart, just to look...

Roger, Is your transmission a T-98? Lucky guy if it is. I think they were only available from the factory on F-4,5,6. It would have helical (diagonal) cut gears, reverse is way right then forward, rear mounting ears face forward and probably has '98' cast into left side of the case.

More likely you have the four speed, non-syncro, spur gear tranny (T-9). Reverse is way right then back, straight cut gears, rear mount ears face to rear, 59T-7006 cast into right side of case. I have four spares for parts. One is a basket case but has real nice gears. Shoot me an email if you think you want it.

You really don't want to replace the counter shaft (cluster gear-pt# 7113 ) It is quite heavy and takes 2 men and a boy to lift it in and out of the top of the case. You have to hold the gear while pushing the bearing shaft thru the case and the center hole of the gear. A real humdinger of a job. I would guess that the gear is also very expensive. The hole thru the center of the gear is drilled in a special tool. You might still be able to get parts from the Muncie Indiana Borg Warner plant. They used to ship parts from the plant in the 90's. Good luck. These are heavy duty trannys and will really take a beating.

 

T-9 - Be Careful there is a small car (Brit?) t9 5 Spd Tranny out there.

Good call, it's a T-9, by the casting numbers. I haven't found it in my book, yet, looked to me like the T-98, after someone mentioned it. Power of suggestion??

Here's some pics of my gears - sorry so dirty, haven't cleaned them up yet...







What do you all think? clean it up, slap it together, and drive, baby drive, or go ahead and tear it down?

Also, the shift lever is pretty sloppy, side to side. Can't see any obvious wear, but thinking maybe build up the side of the bottom, with welding, then grind it down to get rid of some of the slop. Doesn't appear to be in the shift linkage, but some wear on the bottom of the lever. Good idea? Bad idea? Better idea???

The T-9, T-98, T18, T-19 are kinda like Brothers and Sisters born 3 months apart. You look at them, scratch your head and wonder why and how. They're the same thing, only different.
As far as your Tranny, the gears I see look like they're just getting to the point that they will shift good. I would clean it up and check the clearences, end play etc. if they are OK fill it up and stick it back together, if not get that minor rebuild kit. I'm not sure how your shifter is set up, I'll have to see if I can find some detail.
