It's made of two pieces of copper soldered together. Solder flakes off, gas seeps in...float slowly settles to the bottom of the tank.
The same float fits all Ford trucks & cars: 1957 thru 1979, and is still available from Ford, NAPA, others.

C1TF-9276-A .. In-cab Gas Tank Sending Unit Gasket
The entire sending unit is also still available from Ford (it comes with the float & gasket).
The sender fits all in-cab gas tanks from 1961 thru 1977: D7TZ-9275-G

Is it worth saving 7 bucks to go thru all that labor?
And...if you buy the float from a FTE sponsor, the price drops to: $4.95.

take the wire off the tank sending unit and ground it with the key on if guage moves
the sensor is bad if it dosent it is eithier the wiring or the guage if it is the wiring or guage you can hook a om meter to the wire at the sensor and at guage to check check for a break in the wire if it checks out ok the guage is bad

unfortunatly the wiring is well, a mess. the gauge worked when i got the truck. i had to repair the instrument panel and still need a speedomater cable. any way when i reinstalled the panel i could not get the wiring right. i spent several days trying to get it straight. i just want to by pass the old gauge and put in a after market replacement. of some kind. is that possible? jeff

Most aftermarket guages dont use the ford sending Ohms. You must get the correct guage to match the sending unit.
Many companies make Guages.
Do your other guages work? You may have knocked off the pulse wire from the regulator and this will also cause the guage to not function. Ford guages do not work off the direct method they ground and are fed power through a small power regulator attached to the back of the housing. This may be your issue.

Autoparts stores sell a universal inner core replacement kit.
Measure the length of the old core, cut the new core to match and install it in the old housing.
Don't forget to grease the cable lightly with white lithium grease.
When the core dries out, it will bind in the housing, and snap.
Is the speedo driven gear at the end of the cable stripped?
Still available from Ford.

thanks guys. well i didnt know what that box on back of the panel was. i guess this is the regulator. i tried for hours to figure out how it connects and to what.
but to no use. the fuel gauge, and temp dont work. neither does the speedometer. i put an after market set of gauges on the dash. temp, oil, voltage. i also mounted a tach. but that is all i have. the spedo cable was broken inside the housing. i bought a replacement from napa, but it would not go inside the housing. the truck had a com tranny original. someone else pulled it and put a 4 spd in it. the spedo housing was connected fine.and i have it out but i cant find a replacement spedo cable housing. i would like to fix this though. i had to make a measuring stick to check my fuel level in the tank. and have a gas can in the back with a couple of gallons in it for running out. i would like to get the darn gas gauge working if i can. jeff
