Guess its been awhile since I've been here. Might as well signal my return with an odd question.

Specs: Its an '05 Edge 4x4 4.0L with 42000km on it.

It seems to be running a bit rough, maybe a bit sluggish. In the snow, if my wheels spin, it'll rev ok, but put it in Park/Neutral and rev it a bit, it won't go above 3k rpm. Almost like a rev limiter, or there is a fuel/spark problem. The tach dances just above 3k, and the engine misses hard enough to shake the truck.

Any ideas?

The 4.0L has the rev limiter higher, around 4500 - 5000. IF you can't get beyond 3,000 and the engine shakes, you have a misfire. Do a tune up with OEM parts and you should be good.

 

In park or neutral, the newer engines are electronically limited to 3K RPMs.

The shaking is the engine cutting off fuel rapidly, just like hitting the "normal" rev limiter in gear in a manual.

 

my 03 ran rough for a bit like that... needed the MAF cleaned. That helped a little...might try starting there... Only use electrical contact cleaner..

 

Like RP said, its a factory rev limiter that only functions in neutral and park in the automatic transmission models.

 

It is not all, newer engines with electronically controlled throutle have anti-jerk and troutle limiter. No full throutle in neutral and park.

 

Ranger throttle bodies are still cable actuated, not run by a throttle by wire servo. The ECU simply cuts fuel and spark to retard the engine.

 

does the 05 have "traction controle" ? that will make the throttle limited to. i have a escape as well as my ranger and when i punch it in 2wd in the snow it will limit the speed for traction ...

 

No traction control on the Ranger. I have traction control on my Focus ST and when it detects wheel slip it will retard the engine until you get over a certain speed, then it starts applying the ABS system to independent wheels but there is no traction control on the Ranger.

European Rangers have electronically actuated throutle. This is emission thing, but this unit is not reliable enought. But with electronically controlled throutle TC is used.

TC and Hill Start Assist work not only with throutle but with brakes. When wheel skids system with modulator increase pressure in relevant brake cylinder.
Traction controll and HSA are functions of brake control unit. With FDR unit (just accelerometer) and Steering Wheel Angle sensor Electronic Stabilize Program can easyly be installed, but with american emission standard ore with euro-II engines (all they are cabel controlled) these functions can not be used and they are deactivated with parametrization, becouse there is no BS<-->ECU can line. What to do - use cheappes ABS unit.
WHo wants to learn more, I reccomend visit Bosch, Wabco, Knorr-Bendix and Haldex sites. It sounds funny but some of these modern toys is easy to install and parametrize with notebook in garage.

 

That is all fine and well but I'm assuming that lindsaysdaddy is not in Europe. Ford does have several vehicles with the throttle by wire system including the new body F-150s, 05-present Mustangs, all powerstroke diesels, I believe the new explorers and Sport Tracs use this system and probably others that I'm not aware of.

 

Most A/T vehicles have rev limiters in park and neutral. My Olds cuts out at 4k in P/N and 7K in gear.

I know the older rangers dont, but I would guess the newer ones do. If your vehicle runs fine otherwise, I see no need to change plugs/wires. I would only worry about this if you have a misfire code.
