this problem is noticeable mainly in overdrive i would notice a slight hesitation while my foot is on the gas pedal between 45-55 mph. please help!!!

My 1997 Ford F150 4x4 (77,800 miles) 4.6l does exactly what you described. I am interested in a solution. I have changed my transmission fluid twice. I believe it may be an electrical problem rather than mechanical. Other than this annoying problem, I am really pleased with this well-built vehicle.

My 93 problem went away when they cleaned out the EGR passages on the INTAKE MANIFOLD side

 

Rule out the EGR system if you aren't setting a service engine code light. The 97 is very picky on the EGR codes, any malfunction in the EGR system sets a P0401 code and the SEL comes on.

 

I have had the same problem and it was solved by replacing the torque converter. And, this seems to be a very common problem with this year of F150.

Mine is a 99 5.4 and stumbles after about 3400 RPM. It reads 2 error codes, 401 & 402. Is this the same EGR problem??

 

 

I finally found the reason for the hesitation problem on my 1997 Ford F150 Extended Cab 4x4 Lariat (79,500 miles). Bad spark plug wire, number two cylinder. I replaced the entire spark plug wire harness system. Truck runs great/smooth. I also had the injection system professionally cleaned/flushed.

 

My stumbling at that speed was caused by bad wires and one bad plug.
